Where does one start with warmaster? Do many people play? How big should gaming boards be? And final question: does warmaster have a feeling of "min-maxing", meaning is it Alllllll about the numbers? Or is it more strategy based?

I wouldn't if I were you. The game is clunky (not fun) , minis are poor , and almost no one plays.

Now , I will show them why they fear the night.

I don't think that Warmaster was or is that bad.

Granted you may find other rules more to your enjoyment but to me I really like the rules and how it plays.

If you like more robust rules then take a look at Future War commander and use that just "dumb" down the tech level and it should work with minor tweaking.

As for the minis I like them [and I am now GW-fanboy the complete opposite]

I Currently own around 4,500pts worth of Chaos, 2,500pts of High Elves, 2,000pts of Undead and around 1,000pts of Orc and Goblins.
I am slowly building up the armies as I find packs on line or trade off fellow gamers.

You can play Warmaster and Future War Commander in Solo play so you don't actually need to have a gaming community to get into this system.
Where I live there is no gaming club, community or LGS. So I mainly play games either SOLO or with my 6 year old daughter and my 4 year old son.

go do some searched on line regarding game play, also check out the prices GW want for Warmaster minis and what the ridiculous prices some ebayers are wanting to sell Warmaster items for.
most of the time the price will be around $10USD a pack and on the rare occasion you might find one of the for less then $5 grab it but for the really popular packs expect to pay over $30USD for it if not WAY more.

good luck with your Warmaster endeavour

Cheers

Of course, you do not have to stick with GW and the ridiculously overpriced product - good as it is

Try out other manufacturers at 10mm -Pendraken Miniautures have an extensive range of fantasy and there would be nothing wrong with added items from their medieval or rennaisence lines as well. Irregular Miniaures are also handy for cheap and cheerful units.

Warmaster plays well, once you nail the concepts down and if you are careful with how you base your units the figures will be reusable accross a whole set of other rules.

Note Future War/Blitzkreig commander, are both based on the Warmaster design so ......
