Hey all. Some of you may know me for my mnultitude of questions about necrons (and there are more to come!) but my friend is starting an Ork army and I am buying some of his models as a birthday present. I was just wondering what would be a good starting base for him?

He's a hot headed tactical sort of guy. And I imagine he's going to be like my IG friend and want lots of heavy support i.e artillery. Any suggestions on what I should get him? The ork BF looks like it is sorely lacking compared to some of the others, but then again i don't know much about orks.

thanks all!

I may be a noob, but you sir are a noob hater!

Like the others said, boyz. Can never have enough boyz.

The dakkajet is made of awesome, both in rules and kit, so it is impossible to upset an ork player by giving him one. Just sayin'.

My friend plays a squad with warboss/nobs loaded out with power claws and a doc. As long as your not playing to competitive it is hilarious to play against/with. Also shock attack guns are a good laugh, especially if he wants artillery. Also boyz. And, as previously mentioned, as long as your not playing competitive they can be pretty damned effective too.

No matter what list style, a Big Mek with KFF is invaluable.

A basic list from scratch

11 choppa boys, 1 with big shoota, 1 nob with power claw (13 models total)
11 shoota boys, 1 with big shoota, 1 nob with power claw (13 models total)
11 shoota boys, 1 with big shoota, 1 nob with power claw (13 models total)
8 lootas
8 burnas
3 warbikers (nob has a power claw)
1 big mek with boss pole

744 points total - perhaps add a boss pole to one of the nobs, or eavy armour

Kits needed - 4 boxes of boys 4*£18, one small box of boys £6, 2 lootas and burnas boxes £15.50, 1 bikers box £24 1 pack 40mm bases £3 - £136 for 59 models

make up the lootas and burnas using the legs from the boys boxes, call a mek from the lootas and burnas a big mek (add extra stuff to him as required and mount him on a 40mm base)

If your starting off then it is boys you need; the black reach models is not a bad place to go if you can get them cheap. I would then go for a couple of trukks so you mate can fiddle around with loading them out in differnet ways.
Trukks are under rated and with a 24" movement they can deliver some solid troops right up to the enemies front line.

Bikes, Lootas and burnas are not everyones cup of tea so steer clear for the moment.

Maybe consider a pack of grots - their cheap (pts and £), can be used as the troop choice or can be used to man (grot) any kannons you are able to convert from bits.

I would also consider the nobz pack of models to give a black reach nob unit some better weapons and to lead the boyz units you will have; they also have lots of bits for future conversions.

Black reach terminator are easily convertable to killa kans (with the heads from the grot pack and the weapons from the nobz pack - or other bits hanging around)

If you cut the black reach spacemarine captain's back piece in two (just above the waist) and increase his height by 5mm (wire pins and then greenstuff to make the cap extension) you create enough room at the front to fit in a nob-model body and then just go nuts on the conversion to either make a mega-nob or a death-skulls warboss.
