Hey all, I've been learning the new rules lately, and I have to say that I'm a bit underwhelmed by transports and the assault rules.
If I've read it correctly, there is literally NO way for a squad to both disembark and assault in the same turn... This severely hampers assault squad effectiveness, especially with Chaos Marines.
Basically, I've got to either take a Land Raider or drive helter-skelter at their line and hope they blow up my rhino so that I can assault on the next turn (if I'm not pinned).
Does anyone have any suggestions, or perhaps can point out where I've missed something?

Unless it is an open topped transport or an assault vehicle, troops may not assault out of a vehicle.

that seems pretty much it.
because they have made it that the models have to exits then move into formation (because orks have such strict military procedures  )

Wait, so even if my rhino gets destroyed on the enemy's turn, and the squad therein survives any further fire, I still can't assault once it rolls back around to my turn?
Why is that?

dont put away your rhino's yet, they are still useful.
dirge casters prevent the enemy from getting overwatch shots, that could greatly improve the effectiveness of your assault
it just means that space marines cant pretend they are orks (pull up in transport, jump out and assault)

i think it has more to do with the fact that a non open topped vehicle cant be exited in the same way, you cant all leap out at once, there isnt enough space
an assault vehicle like a landraider though has a special hatch for charging out of, and orks just leap out from all sides of their trukks

Rhinos are still useful.
But assault is not.
I'd scrap assault this edition if I were you, and go shooty.

if you equip your marines with close combat weapon you still get the bolter though which is nice

ive had success with getting out rapid firing then flatting the rihno out to block line of sight to the mairnes. and assaulting next turn

Per the Rulebook FAQ: linky
Q: If a unit disembarks from a destroyed vehicle during the enemy
turn, can it Charge in the Assault phase of its own turn? (p80)
A: No, unless the vehicle in question was an Assault Vehicle.

Transports, and I know this will sound weird, are for transporting. They are not for assaulting. They are simply for moving a unit from one place to another quicker than that unit can get there on foot.
Your 35 point Rhino gets to move 10 Marines up to 30" in two turns; then they can still shoot when they get there if you're so inclined.

This is an actual rule in the actual rulebook. Quit whining about how you can imagine someone's army touching you in a bad place and play by the actual rules.

Assaults aren't dead. You can no longer charge without detriment and it cannot be your only strategy. This edition leans more towards combined arms since shooting was buffed to be on the same level as assault.

Thanks for the replies, especially the FAQ bit. That helps me quite a bit. I was always a bigger fan of shooting than assaulting anyway, but this does put a bit of a damper on my power sword chosen. Ohh well, they've got bolters galore anyway.
