Subject: How are wounds applied to mixed units in Combat?

Hi,
I have come across a situation where I can't find a clear ruling, so was hoping someone here might know the answer.
Basically the question is, how are wounds distributed to a unit with different stat lines/
i'e if wounds are caused to one type of model and they are all wiped out do the remainder carry over to another model type in the unit or do they vanish?
To further explain I have a group of five giant rat an a pack master in the back rank. If they enemy unit does enough damage to kill the giant rats and more, does the remainder carry over to the pack master?
Thank for any help, if you can guid me to specific rules to back up answers that will help also.
Cheers for any help

I believe they will carry over, unless the Rat Ogre unit has specific rules regarding this.

I don't believe so. Units with split profiles, you have to declare who you are attacking. You can't attack skinks and kill kroxigor, that would be unfair (or Temple Guard and Slann). You want to attack rat ogres, you have to use their much higher stats to inflict wounds. Like the wounds for heroes and rank and file don't carry over. And if they aren't in B2B, you can't attack them at all. It's on Dividing Attacks on BRB 48.

Most units where there are "handlers" have rules governing how to deal with this. For a Hydra the handlers are ignored for everything except the attacks they make. They cannot be wounded or attacked. They die when the Hydra dies.
Giant rats had a similar rule iirc, rat ogres may as well.

Mixed units for Skaven are different. Those really are combat models in there (moulders). You randomize impact hits and missile hits between them. You can do that because those don't have to roll against something (like WS). But it doesn't say anything about CC, so the prevailing BRB rules would be in effect which means you can only attack B2B.
For Lizardmen, Hydra, those are just counters and essentially keep the beast from going loony. But for Skaven they are attack units with full stats.

Thanks, for the info all. it seems most are in favour of the attacks not carrying.

Please coul you confirm what your possition is DukeRusfield are you saying the prevailing rules for b2b attacks mean they don't carry also?
Cheers.

This is a bit more difficult than than I figured. So this is just MY view.
The BRB says if you're fighting models of different characteristic profiles you have to declare which you're attacking. And you can divide your attacks between them. You can even target the champion directly (you have to) because he has a different profile. Hits will carry to models of the same profile in the unit, all the way up to the command group (and champ). They step up.
If you got 3 packmasters in a unit of 15 giant rats and for whatever reason you got 2 packmasters up front and one in the back, I ASSUME that if you decide to direct your attacks on the packmasters, any overkill will kill the last packmaster, but won't carry to the rats.
Giant Rats and Packmasters are exactly the same except for BS. So RAW they are different profiles. So you have to declare who you're attacking. Pack's have armor and rats don't. There is a reason to attack them first, to try and make the whole unit respond worse next turn.
Same goes for Rat Ogres. Their profiles are really different. And you're generally not going to have packmasters up front, cuz then your RO can't attack. But if they get flanked or whatever, you have to decide who you're attacking and if you attack RO, the hits carry among all those and if you attack.
BUT, this would also apply to Skinks and Kroxigor IMHO. I know the trick is to put them in the mixed unit, but it also says they can attack and be attacked in return. If you are attacking a T4, 4+ armor save monster, you can't LOL remove a skink if he takes a wound. You rolled against a Kroxigor's stats. That wouldn't make any sense. And it specifically says they can be attacked. Slann, it specifically says, aren't in melee.
The only thing I hesitate at, is that when removing wounds, the BRB doesn't differentiate. You got rank-and-file, command. Characters never have wounds carried over, and vice versa.
So on one hand, I'm saying treat them like almost a separate unit. But I'm also quoting the BRB that says you have to choose your target among different profiles. It just doesn't say what happens if you do. Probably because there's only ~3 instances of this and usually it's Champion, Character or separate unit, all of which are in the BRB.

Thanks for clarifying. I'm in agreement with you. even the bit about the looness of the casulties. But for me I think the declaring who you are atacking is solid enough for the commense conclusion of the later. Shame it has been left a bit open though.
Thanks again everyone
