So I was thinking, never a good Idea, and About a 4 foot gaming table would mean its roughly the size of a football field, and if you think about it how fast a game lets say is 5 turns is really less than an hour in real time. Rediculous, but what are your guys thoughts on this?

An hour? Less than 5 minutes I would say. How long does it take to run across the width of a football field and shoot some bullets? Not very long.

Turn 1: Rhino skids onto the battle field.
Turn 2: Rhino drives a bit further and skids to a halt. Marines jump out and fire a double-tap.
Turn 3: Marines take enemy fire and sprint into cover, firing another double-tap.
Turn 4: Enemies jump into the Marine lines and they trade one or two blows, before the Marines are victorious.
Turn 5. Marines sprint across open ground to reach the marked position, trading speed for firepower.
Turn 6: Double Tap. Sergeant voxes "Captain, Position Delta-7 secured"
I wouldn't put anymore than 3 to 10 seconds on each turn with some "cinematic" stretching here and there.
I doubt a regular game would ever be more than a minute or so "real time".

that's only assuming that everything is going according to plan. but when heavy ordnance, hoards of enemies and giant monsters are roaming about there is more than enough reason why you can't do what you want to.
which is to say, you only gave the best scenario, a flawless victory.

No. I gave the rough sequence of events a single unit (say 5 tac marines) would do in 6 turns on the field.
If there's heavy ordnance, hordes of enemies, etc.., they would all individually do a similar path of action as the one the tac marines followed. I was under the assumption that all the units (including both enemy and friendly) move/act roughly simultaneously in a turn, not in sequence. So the size of the game shouldn't really impact the "real time" of the battle unfolding. It's just more stuff happening at the same time.
And of course, if it isn't flawless and the tac marines die in turn 4, they'll spend even less time in the action.

The battle would not take an hour. The game takes an hour, and that's because it's turn based, you have to move the models manually, roll dice, etc.
IRL, it will probably take at most 10-15 minutes.
The battles in 40k aren't meant to represent full scale conflict; they are more like skirmishers or parts of a larger battle.

the 40k battlefield is not a to scale representation. Distances are distorted and stretched.
Things within 6" may represent the area within 50 yards of the models in question.
Things within 24" maybe be a half-mile away.
A Railgun or LRBT taking a 60" shot is shooting at a target several kilometers away.
Models in BtB may simply be within a few yards of each other.

It could take alot longer to. ie. Space Marines arrive then get pinned down in buildings by enemy artillery fire and have to hold out untill "x" happens. They could be there for like a week!

Pretty friggin' long when suddenly you're not a plastic guy and somebody is shooting back at you, lol.
But not very long at all when you're a Hormagaunt, or an eight foot tall ceramite clad angel of death

"Did you ever notice how in the Bible, when ever God needed to punish someone, or make an example, or whenever God needed a killing, he sent an angel? Did you ever wonder what a creature like that must be like? A whole existence spent praising your God, but always with one wing dipped in blood. Would you ever really want to see an angel?" |
