The Emperor's Gift.

Aaron Dembski-Bowden is easily the best author in the GW stable.

"Did you ever notice how in the Bible, when ever God needed to punish someone, or make an example, or whenever God needed a killing, he sent an angel? Did you ever wonder what a creature like that must be like? A whole existence spent praising your God, but always with one wing dipped in blood. Would you ever really want to see an angel?"

I enjoyed Fulgrim (a lot) Nemesis, Legion, Mechanicum and both short story books (are there 3 out now?).

Read Battle of the Fang/DoW as non HH books, pretty trashy imho :(

HOW do people like Fulgrim? It's a terrible book!

It was a cheap, boring way to illustrate how someone might fall to Chaos.

To summarise the whole book: "We went to a temple, now we're all crazy. And Fulgrim was tricked by a magic sword".

There was no time given to the way a person might fall to Chaos. The ever increasing cost of personal gratification, the ruinous journey that starts with innocent steps, the justifications a person can build around themselves to legitimize the horrors they commit. It was just "Hey, we're all going crazy!"

It was awful.

Many people, myself interested, find the primarchs boring. I think the theme of aestheticism are what people like about Fulgrim.

Fulgrim, Death or Glory, 15 Hours, and whatever the Gaunt's Ghosts novel is called where they're sent to the chaos infested world to assassinate some traitor General. I think it's called Traitor General.

No, I think by any measurable quality Fulgrim was terrible. The characters were flat, boring and acted completely strangely, their motivations were impossible to discern. I can't understand what people like about it.

I disagree.

Besides. Acting strangely is practically a necessary prerequisite to becoming a servant of chaos.

Hiding in a dark alley with a sharp knife!

Honestly, i do not read much fiction in general, let alone sci-fi/fantasy material. I'm more of a non-fiction kind of guy. (military and criminal justice history stuff more than anything) Over the last 23 years (the time I've been playing 40k) i have read perhaps half a dozen 40k novels. To be truthful, I was not overly impressed with any of them. Admittedly that may have been more due to my general negative view of the genre than anything else.

If I have to recomend one, I suppose I'll plug ian Watson's "Space Marine". I've always like the Imperial Fists and it (along with the fluff in the 1st edition Epic rules) was one of the factors that influenced me to build my Imperial Fist army.

We got to see Fulgrim punch a Wraithlord to death, suffocate an Avatar of Kaine to death, golf-putt Ferrus Mannus' spine to pieces, and then later lop his head off. Those events alone make the book objectively fantastic.

Fulgrim's fall was stupid and made no sense. So what? Neither did Horus' fall, Magnus fall, or Lorgar's fall. The Horus Heresy, as a series, has simply dropped the ball on making any of the Primarchs genuinely intriguing or sympathetic characters. That alone isn't enough to condemn the books, though.

edit- I don't really see how you could clown the book on the merit of how nonsensical the plot was, though. You just said that The Emperor's Gift is your favorite BL book, yet the sub-plot regarding the Space Wolves fighting the Inquisition/Grey Knights is one of the most idiotic and nonsensical plot-lines in the entire WH40K library, with an equally terrible resolution to said plot. I love ADB, he's my favorite 40K author, but the last half of that book was gak.

Pretty much, hes dethroned Abnett.

Thus my favorite books are Night Lords Trilogy, Emperor's Gift, and First Heretic. Though Eisenhorn is still an old favorite.

I always liked Gaunt's Ghosts.

Also, I just read Path of the Renegade and I really enjoyed it. It had different characters with independent motivations, and some of them even changed over the course of the book.

It wasn't Dostoyevsky, but it was a pleasant change from the endless streams of bolterporn in the HH and Space Marine Battles books.

Eisenhorn all the way!!!

thorn and talon was ok, really enjoyed pariah. Nothing else by mr abnett has been an enjoyable read for me (i tried gaunts ghosts, got about 4 books in i think.... wont read them again)

i got through the first 2 heresy books then gave up on the series (with the exception of the garro audio books, and the 2nd one of them was dissapointing). Barring a few funny moments, i spent most of the first HH books screaming to myself "HORUS IS A TACTICAL slow"
