Still have a lot of work to do on my Empire army (painting, basing, etc.), but am already working on getting a VC army together. So far I've got a battalion box (the old one), a Mortis Engine, a box of Vargiests, a box of Black Knights and a couple of characters. The only unit I've actually assembled is the 3 Vargiests. Now I also have the VC army box.

Out of the stuff in the army box I already know I'm going with Black Knights over Hexwraiths and probably another engine instead of a throne, but I am wondering whether to build 3 more Vargiests or start a unit of Crypt Horrors. I really like the Vargiest models, but is there any point in having 6 of them in an army, either in a block of six or 2 units of 3?

Also curious about anyone's experiences running all Necro led VC lists.

Thanks

Vargiests are a glass hammer while horrors are for all intents and purposes ogres that can be raised back. 2 units of 3 vargeists can kill a lot while a unit of 6-18 horrors is not going to die if you have sufficient magic to keep them on their feet.

The problem with the 'vote with your dollar' response is that it doesn't take into account why we're not buying the product. I want to enjoy 40k enough to buy back in. It was my introduction to traditional games, and there was a time when I enjoyed it very much. I want to buy 40k, but Gamesworkshop is doing their very best to push me away, and simply not buying their product won't tell them that.

Vargheists also have the vampiric rule themselves meaning they can go out of the generals bubble to kill stuff. They should only really be going in flanks or after small units. Im not sure what the best size for these guys are but either a unit of 5/6 or 2 small units of 3 seems good as well. I like vampires better than necros personally but that's just my opinion.

I was in the same boat. I know everything I wanted to do with the dual kits - Coven Throne, Terrorgeist, Black Knights. But when I got to the Crypt Horrors box I had no idea. But the last thing I needed in my army was another anvil unit, while I definitely had a use for something to tag team with my Varghulf to go war machine/solo character hunting. So Vargheists it is.

Don't vargheists frenzy? Something else to keep in mind.

Edit

Actually now that I think about it, they're sorta two different types of units. The Varghiests are hammers while the horrors are anvils. Go with which one your army needs.

However, you need at least 6-9 horrors for them to be effective, while only 3 varghiests are sufficient to pack a punch

Good point Necro, and with Ld 7 will definitely have to be managed. Another new rule to get used to (not a lot of frenzy in an Empire army )

Well then, it seems like 3 Vargeists on each flank could be as fun as it sounds and 3 lonely Horrors not so much. So, I think I will build the ones in the army box as Vargs and if I want to add Horrors down the road will plan to invest in 2+ boxes of them.

Thanks for the input guys

While it may be slightly off topic, I'm kind of curious about something.

What was the point of varghiests? The models could be counts as varghulfs, and the stats from what I recall are worse, but they're also cheaper and can be taken in packs.

So basically they're just weaker spammable varghulfs? Sorta like how horrors are just upgraded less spammable ghouls?

It was just a weird addition to the army.

Just 'cause all the new books are getting a big monster (Arachnarok, Griffin) and MC/MI units (Demigryphs, Trolls)?

They are the only real flying monstrous infantry. They hit like a ton of bricks but cannot take a punch at all.

I like them as they have he vampire rule so I can run them wide. Remember they are skirmishers, so they can change formation easily. That means you can land me with their back to the enemy to prevent them charging before you are ready.

Units of fllyers are skirmishers aren't they (I didn't miss vanguard in there somewhere too, did I?)!

Seems like they can be used a bit like pistoliers then. No vanguard and fangs instead of pistols, but similar concept. Up the flank to harass/redirect or get into the backfield to muck with the artillery.
