Since reading the latest Blood Angels HH novel I've been really hung up on the character of the Red Angel. Without spoiling he's basically a BA that has been posessed by a very powerfull Khorne daemon. It's an awesome bit of fluff and as soon as I read it I knew exactly what I wanted to do.

So here is the wip. He's a kitbash of WFB WoC, WFB Beastmen, and CSM Posessed.

Getting the arms to line up was an hour long task:

The arms are cut and positioned in 6 different places:

Err, isn't the Red Angel the name given to Angron?

Ah the fire! I hadn't thought of that. Not sure there'd be a good way to model that, have to think on it.

You'd have to read the novel for the full story, but shortly the Red Angel was Angron's name, however the Red Angel is also a seperate entity.

As for the identity of the Red Angel:

"The Red Angel" is a term that has been applied to Angron, but was originally used for a mysterious, apparently possessed/captured Blood Angel space marine seen in the Horus Heresy: Collected Visions series. AFAIK he had no backstory and was simply shown in a single picture alongside Horus and the other main characters (also the source of Malogurst, Ingethel, etc).

Nice conversion/sculpting work there - he looks great.

Just wanted to ask if you tried him with the weapon around the other way, overhead swing vs leaping stab - cool either way really though!

Nice use of the Minotaur upper arms too.

Thanks for the compliments guys! I hadn't tried the overhead swing, I had a vision stuck in my head and got a little tunnel vision. I may flip it around though and see how it looks, thanks for the tip!

So I really liked the chain spear I had going on, but it was waaaay too flimsy. I tried to pin it but as I'd never pinned a model before I began to really feth it up about a third way through the process. so I'm trying out different weapon ideas and wanted some more opinions on which way to go.

Here is a spear option with a bulkier and hopefully more stable look:

Very interesting! Honestly, I like the spear best. My only 2 bits about it would be first) the close hands grip doesn't help with the flimsy look, and second) I'm not sure I like the hand guard still attached to the spearhead.

Axe. It just seems to fit better regarding size and pose.

My vote for axe. Spear can do too, but axe fits better. The banner is a no go imo - looks most unnatural in that pose.

I would tend to agree with the axe voters here at the moment, its a bit more boring but fits the pose better I think, although to jazz it up a bit the axe could be burning (to include the fire element??) Greenstuffing fire Isn't toooo hard, I'm sure there are some good tutorials around too.

btw great looking concept in general, looking forwards to seeing more.

Consensus seems to be the axe then! The whole concept began with the overhand spear strike so I'm loathe to completely eliminate it, however I think I can make the axe look "burny" enough to fit the character. Thanks guys.

Just a small update:

I've gone with an overhand swing of a sword, foregoing the polearm as it was just too flimsy. Now I just need to figure out some sort of pommel for the sword and then I can finally start some painting on this guy!

Got around to some painting. I'm really aprehensive about my skills doing my modeling justice, but I'm taking my time and trying my best. Any comments/tips/critisisms are welcome.

First couple layers of ink/wash with some minimal highliting on the armour.

I dont think you need to be worried about this at all, its looking phenomenal! I think the armour in particular will really pop when you incorperate some more highlights. I'm really liking the wings too, not massively over the top inferno just slowly smouldering away at the edges, very nice.

How are you planning on doing the sword? Although I voted for a burning weapon before it might blend in a bit, maybe something that contrasts? A cold blue steel ?

Either way keep it up, Is looking REALLY good.

Thanks man, much appreciated. A "cold" sword is actually exactly what I was thinking about, once I started on the everything else I realized that he was going to be more than burn-y enough and a cold sharp sword will provide a perfect contrast. It's all new territory for me though so like I said, just taking my time. Thanks again for the input!

More progress, some highlighting on the armour and I've started to bring the burning flesh up into yellow a little bit. The armour is going to be brought up to a pinkish highlight, just because organically that's where my pallete is taking me. However it's not particularly fluffy as this is supposed to have originally been a Blood Angel. I just felt like I needed contrast between the red armour and the flame wreathed flesh. Maybe I should go super dark with the armour? Looking at it now I'm thinking perhaps a really heavy wash with mud once I've got it all lined up.

Also I tried fiddling with some camera settings so the colors aren't as blown out as before. Don't know how much better it is though.

As always I crave your suggestions/tips/critiques.

I think your right about the armour, go darker rather than lighter, at the moment your getting dangerously close to a pink marine! I think like you say wash it until its darker, I think a deep dark red would work really well against the bright skin thats looking really good btw!

Going to give a light wash on the flames and try to blend the orange/yellow a bit better, and then bring the flames up to a white highlite. Not sure about the armour, I kind of like it now but I think perhaps one more light line on the edges. The sword also.
I have to say that I'm happy I decided to un-pink-ify the armour, looks much better now. I'm also more than a little proud that I haven't completely ruined many hours of modeling work and sculpting with my amateur painting! Definitely taking my time and learning more each time I pick up a brush, this is what makes the hobby enjoyable for me!
