rulebook states that you can have UP TO 4 large and small sections. Just wanna make sure this means I can just take one small and large section only for example or can I just take say one small section and thats it.

I can see no tactical advantage to taking less than the full amount, it doesn't get any cheaper.
50pts for one small section? Sure if you really want.

I find sometimes I will use the ADL to block off a whole section to use for a gunline and simply wrap any extra sections out towards the enemy to make as much of an obstacle as possible, you certainly can take fewer of the pieces if you would like though.
