RAW:
From the Black Templars Codex:
The Emperor's Champion always fights as an Independent Character and may never lead, join or be attached to a Command Squad.

From the 6th edition Rulebook:
Independent Characters can join other units.

Interpretation:
The Emperor's Champion can join a unit as long as it is not a Command Squad.

Research:
I've looked in both the rulebook FAQ and the Black Templars FAQ and can find nothing that even references this rule.

Question:
What is your interpretation? Has this come up in any tournaments?

I'm both chaotic and orderly. I value my own principles, and am willing to go to extreme lengths to enforce them, often trampling on the very same principles in the process. At best, I'm heroic and principled; at worst, I'm hypocritical and disorderly.

An Emperors Champion can join most units the only exception being that he can not join command squads, he also is the only HQ choice (although he doesn't use up a FOC slot) that doesn't unlock a ommand squad. Basically he can go in any unit EXCEPT command squads

I'd agree with that.

With Chaos, Tzeench would probably turn your hands, feet and face into
scrotums, complete with appropriate nerve endings. Then Khorne would
force you and all your friends to fight to the death using your new
scrotal appendages. Once they get tired of that, you get tossed to
Slaanesh who <censored by order of the Inquisition>, until you finally
end up in Nurgle's clutches and he uses you as a loofah.
