Basically, can a model advance towards another model to get it into melee range without charging (so without advancing directly towards it) ?
If so, can a model beginning in the front arc of an enemy finish its move behind it, and then backstrike it?

Charging isn't needed to get into melee. The main advantages of charging is that for non-warjacks or warbeasts, it provides about the only way they normally have to boost, and for everyone in general, it provides the extra speed. But if you want a different angle, or not having others run, or something, you can just walk up and hit. For warjacks and warbeasts, unless they get a free charge, this is even preferrable.
To gain a backstrike bonus, a model pretty much has to at no point ever be in the target model's front arc. You must start in the back arc and end in the back arc. If at either point you aren't doing this, no backstrike.
And stuff.

Blaque has the right of it here. Also, with back-strikes the actual wording is that a model cannot be in the front arc of it's target at any time during it's activation. This means if you had some out of activation movement (from various feats/spells like Telekenisis), you can move around the back of an opponent before your activation begins, allowing you to eventually get the backstrike.

Very slight clarification about back strikes, the point of origin for the attack has to be completely within the back arc for the activation. Normally this is the model making attacks but with arc nodes/channelling you can use as the point of origin to back strike.
