Howdily Diddily Dakka!

I can't base models well at all. Everything I've tried looks awful, and as a result I rarely base my minis, which really detracts from their aesthetic. And so I turn to you guys, in search of some Easy-but-Effective (and preferably cheap) basing techniques.

I'm a CSM player (Word Bearers in particular), so anything along the gothic urban/rubble/ruins type route would be awesome, or going with the Word Bearers theme something Chapel-y maybe? But anything that looks good will do, as long as it's grimdark!

Even some awesome websites that sell particularly Dudely bases would be appreciated, but nothing too expensive, my bank account really wouldn't appreciate it

Stay Frosty,

Well you could go with the traditional gluing sand to the base before priming. Then the colour you make it and how you make it look depends more on the overall scheme of the army.

Or the new texture paints. They are a bit difficult to manage at first, but they give that nice rough ground look without the two-step process of glue and then paint.

Annoyingly I've already primed most of my models, so that's not really an option :(

But the texture paints could work!

I'm not a fan of them, but I suppose they could.

You can still make the base even if you've primed your models. there are myriads of tutorials out there for basing, mot of them super simple and easy to do.

You can get rubble/urban tarmac basing like material (a bit like static grass) which you can get from most modelling shops, just PVA them in place. If you want them less flat you can always cut up some old bits of sprue to make like fallen gerdars or such.

You will need to be careful doing it however.

If you have the $$$ fantascape gothic ruins are the best bet.

Hello,

I like using whats called "Ballast" for my bases. I like doing the Lava effect.
The Ballast as of late is not the old iron ore. It is now crushed Walnut.
I will paint on glue and leave a "path" of bare plastic base to represent the lava. Glue the ballast down and let it dry. Then mix up some Rust brown paint and drop some elmers school glue in there and paint the ballast with the mix. Then glue on crushed up pieces of garden lava rock to the base. Paint the bare plastic red, then drybrush with orange and then yellow on the edges. Then hit the lava with a gloss top coat...looks awesome!!
I will try to post some pics this afternoon of my bases..
