So I've decided to start a journey into music and have acquired a 76 key Casio keyboard, some software and I'm arranging lessons so I can learn to play piano. Music itself gets a decent amount of conversation around here, and really it's a fundamental part of every human culture. Do you guys play any instruments (besides Alby, we know, you're awesome and can make the Muses weep with your skillz ) if so what do you play and for how long? For everyone else, do you have an instrument you want to play? If so what's holding you back from having a run at it?

I beg of you sarge let me lead the charge when the battle lines are drawn
Lemme at least leave a good hoof beat they'll remember loud and long

You must go on a walking pilgrimage to retrieve it and anoint the strings with blessed unguents as you retune it. Only then shall the machine spirit forgive this indignity XD

When I was in middle school I took some piano lessons. Later in life, as an adult, I took some piano lessons to try to relearn some stuff. Right now I have a Bass guitar that I bought because I thought I was going to give up tabletop gaming, since its music that gets the chicks.

The bass sits in its case next to its practice amp in exact same spot where I put them when i came home with them.

I have had Violin, Trumpet and Drum lessons.

Drum lasted longest (2/3 years) I liked that the most, but wasn't dedicated enough.

I have a guitar, but have never really used it. Really want to learn how to play it, although for no reason in particular i'd rather learn on acoustic and I have an electric one...

When I was about 10 to 14 or so, I played the trumpet. I also dabbled in bass guitar, and now electric guitar.

I currently own 2 guitars, but I haven't learned to play them because of time and other commitments.

I had the drums could play a single slipknot song slightly modified since I don't have a double bass drum medal.
Got up to grade 4-6 but I lost my drumming spirit.

Might go back to it someday, when I have the money for a better metal sounding kit. Heyho.

I used to play guitar when younger.
Can't do it any more - not since I bisected the (radial) nerve to my thumb - leaving an impressive 2 1/2 inch scar(and it no longer has the same control) so acoustic is out.

Also, touching the scar to the string (electric) results in the slight current going straight down the nerve to my elbow, and the entire forearm going into spasm.

So I sold my beloved Ibanez radius left hand.

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).
Old enough to know better, young enough to not give a ****.

That is not dead which can eternal lie ...

... and yet, with strange aeons, even death may die.

No real musical talent. I tried and failed multiple times with various instruments.

Few months ago I acquired a mandolin and have been playing a few nights a week with some instructional videos.

Oh boy this'll be a fun thread.

I play piano and took lessons for 8 years. It's a REALLY good foundation for playing music, and you're doing the right thing starting with piano.
I've played viola for about 3.5 years now with school lessons.
I play regularly and am self taught on guitar, bass guitar, and vocals (including screamed vocals - those took forever to learn the right way), and am currently trying to teach myself drums.
I've recently been taking a stab at composition, and briefly played in a band (hoping to join/start a long term one fairly soon).

So yeah, I love music even more than 40k, which is saying a lot

Always wanted to play the drums. My dad was a pretty good drummer back in the day and I like to think that i've acquired his sense of timing and skills on the old skins.....

Never have the time, nor do I have the space or nice enough neighbours to even attempt it however....

My brother dabbles in Bass and a few of my mates have tendencies towards Guitars....

I play:

Guitar- I've been playing off & on for about 7-8 years. And I'm terrible. Power chords & punk rock only.
(I play my frankenstrat, compiled of pieces of a half-dozen other guitars (Yamaha body, MIM Fender neck, JB humbucker pickup, some kinda floating bridge, etc. Always plugged into a Rockman)

Piano- Haven't played in years, used to be decent.

Trombone- Haven't played in years, was mediocre at best

Keys - 20 years, guitar - 22 years

My advice: practice everyday. Spend a half hour to an hour doing basic exercises, scales, chords and transitions, etc, then another half hour to hour "noodling" about and seeing what you can come up with. I didn't initially and it made things really tough. Not just for physically being able to play, but it also limited the creative process.

I have a MiA fender jazz bass, and I've been playing for about 16 years. Right now it's on loan to a friend who's band tours and I miss it greatly. Music has been a friend and stress release for so many years I don't know if I could live without anymore haha.

I played the Clarinet for about six years, in junior high and primary school. I was the best player in the class, and I carried the band, more or less.

Which isn't saying much of anything, considering the other members were a bunch of lazy baka. After I left primary school, I never played anything hard again, and it was mainly just marches and other one-page nonsense. I was rubbish at improvisation, and I still am, and I anticipate always being rubbish at it.

I picked up guitar in high school, as most edgy longhaired kids do, and just today, I threw my guitar on the side of the road, for the trashmen to pick up. No regrets at all. Just looking at that thing made me feel like crap.

However, firing ordinance at someone isn't nearly as threatening as firing ordnance at someone.
Ordinance is a local law, or bill, or other form of legislation.
Ordnance is high caliber explosives.
No 'I' in ordnance.
Don't drown the enemy in legislation, drown them in explosives.

Trumpet, guitar, bass, drums and alittle piano.
You don't have to spend two hours a night practicing but nothing beats playing EVERY DAY for improving your skills. Especially at the beginning.
Also if you're in it for the chicks learn to play piano and sing at the same time. I got more chicks in 30mins of joke songs on the piano than 13 years of guitar. I was in bands and everything. The ladys will think you're classy and mature.
