So, anyone see this going anywhere? The Catalonians have been trying to achieve this for years (and have been pretty militant in doing so). A legitimate aim, or just the result of the economic crisis making the region's issues come to the fore?

It seems that regional splits are becoming the in thing right now...

Catalonia is a lot richer than the rest of Spain, they subsidise them. Hence it would be terrible for the rest of Spain if they split, though I'm pretty ambivilent.

Unnessesarily extravegant word of the week award goes to jcress410 for this:

Catalonia is already largely autonomous, to a degree anyway. I don't see how a desire for full automony is in anyway illegitimate.

Do not underestimate the Squats. They survived for millenia cut off from the Imperium and assailed on all sides. Their determination and resilience is an example to us all.

Its just a shame that they couldn't fight off Andy Chambers.

Like you've said, they've been requesting independance for a very long time, ever since Franco, so it's more than likely not just an opportunistic bailing out of the crisis...

As for legitimacy, well, it's the people's choice.

0.0 Bloody google spell checker. I meant "legitimate". Heh, totally reversed my point.

Personally, Catalonia is a sexy name for a country. ...Just saying.

Having lived in Catalunya, I can attest to the fact that it is basically a different country to Spain. They should secede.

I almost always agree with Albatross, I can't see why anyone wouldn't.

Catalonians felt like their wealths are leeched by an ineffecient government so they must break free.

If Catalonia becomes independent. This season will be the last one to see 'El Clasico' matches. between Real Madrid and Barcelona FC. indeed, some catalonian footballers support independency (so they will become prosper ALONE and leave Spain to its utter dissolution)

It may not be, Barcelona would probably want to stay in La Liga, Catalonia will not be able to have its own Football league that will give Barca the same revenue they get now. And because Barcelona are pretty much the biggest club in the world right now, they will probably get what they want. They almost certainly increase revenue for La Liga, meaning (if TV money is split the same way it is in Premiership) other clubs benefit. I think I read before Fifa and/or Uefa would have to sanction it, and for the benefit of football in general, taking Barcelona out of La Liga, taking away the competitive El Clasico match (unless they met in the CL) would be a huge loss to football.

Obviously this is just my opinion, but if Catalonia become independent, but Barcelona FC want to remain in La Liga, they will.

Barcelona would have to stay in the spanish league, there's no way they could afford not to be in it.

If the region does leave I'd imagine it'd be much like how Monaco plays in the French league.

The poor man really has a stake in the country. The rich man hasn't; he can go away to New Guinea in a yacht. The poor have sometimes objected to being governed badly; the rich have always objected to being governed at all

They would benefit short term, spain would suffer though as would the EU.
Lets say the EU survives and possibly prospers, would we let them back in?

I think the vote would be close, but will short term beat long term? I think they might become independant as it seems this generation is determind to screw it up for mine.

^ Is there any chance that EU will survive the crisis and Catalonian separatists will regret the decision? EU seems to suffer deficits for years where many nations spend more than what they accumlates annually.

Also many billion euros earmarked to Sicily developments are leeched by mafias and co. mew! and even if EU decided to terminate Greece membership it would do a little to solve any problems.
