While I have no problem with DakkaDakka's decision to censor swear words (although I do love swearing), do you really think gak, feth, donkeycave, witch, etc really do a good job of censoring them? I don't, because it's pretty easy to figure out what those words mean which kind of

defeats the purpose of censorship which is to disguise or remove something.

Replacing the offensive word with something that isn't offensive is the entire point of the filter. It allows people to still use more 'colourful' (if less actually useful) adjectives, while not actually being offensive.

Whether or not you know which word the person might have used without the filter (and it's not all of them... 'gak' has a way of easing it's way into your vocabulary) it is disguised. It's the difference between someone swearing in front of you, and someone swearing in the next room. Sure, you might suspect that they're doing it... but since they're not doing it in front of you, it's not a problem. Or it shouldn't be...

It's better than using *** which is just ugly. It's not like "What the *** is going on" is any less ambiguous than "What the feth is going on".

As far as I can see it works well. I commonly find myself saying the word "feth" rather than the normal alternative, and I see no harm with people knowing what the word should mean. After all, swear filters are normally only there because of younger children.

I genuinely now say "feth" and "gak" more than I do the alternative!

A good habit to form IMO.

Reported!

Seems to be a problem with all compound words of that root.

I figured it would catch the first part, but seems like it doesn't catch embedded sweat words.

donkey-cave is though... (I didn't say donkey-cave)
Seems odd considering it means the exact same thing.

Some stuff inevitably gets overlooked.

The filter isn't really intended to catch everything, though. It's more of a first filter to catch the most common stuff. It's still up to posters to watch what they're typing and make an attempt to keep their posts within the forum's rules.

Is that what I think it is, a donkey cave?

Yeah, actually if you look at the quoted text (like if I click quote on your post) you'll see that purps said a**h*** and it filtered it to donkey cave... I had to ask what donkey cave meant, because I didn't realize it meant what it meant and didn't notice the quoted text thing lol.

I too, regularly use the words 'Gak' and 'Feth' in common, everyday conversations. It's become a slow creeping habit of mine. Especially the phrase 'What the feth!?'

As an aside does anyone know if c*** is filtered? I dare not type the whole thing, one because it's a disgusting word and two, I may get banned if the filter dosnt catch it!

Perhaps if a mod were to write up a list of words the swear filter changes things to, and a list of clues as to what the origionals are?

A-hole = donkeycave
F word = Feth
s word = gak
c word = witch
female dog in heat = does not filter
n word = [see forum posting rules] (with a link to forum posting rules)
raccon minus the rac = [see forum posting rules]

Pretty sure those are all of them...

Compound words using a profanity are usually not auto-filtered, because there are just too many of them possible to make it reasonable to program in that many filters. Likewise with people who "cleverly" spell a profanity using spaces or periods or dashes or other characters to evade the filter.

Bear in mind that profanity is still against the rules, and a person evading the filter by posting a profanity in a way the filter doesn't catch will be held responsible for that violation.

Whilst I do swear a fair bit, I am forever grateful for the swearfilter for protecting me from teenies who've just discovered rude words and would have endless pages of slewed profanity without wit, content or meaning behind them.
