Hi everyone,

I had someone from my local GW come around for a game earlier, and they were extremely suprised that i had a 6x4 and an 8x4 board.

Apparently, because of the local GW's policy, they have only ever played on 4x4's. So what is everyones opinion? Is a 8x4 just too big? or is it worth it for slightly larger games?

I only have played at my house. I have a 4 by 6 table that converts to 4 by 8... And I don't think I would like to play on anything smaller unless the game was ridiculously small. The space is great for tactical play. and for my Tau friend, playing lengthwise on the board is a little more fun.

6x4 is all my group plays on.

For Apocalypse games, we go much larger.

A 4x4 table is too small for anything over 750 points, IMHO.

4x4 is fine for <1250 points. The norm is 4X6.

I like 8x4 because it gives you room for models, books, etc.

6x4 all the way. It's the standard.

How much larger for apoc?

I am considering doing 12x4 or 24x4 for apoc.

I'd rather do 12x8 for Apoc. Makes it harder to reach the middle - but you can put some massive interesting terrain piece there instead.

We use effectively ~12x6 or ~10x8 for Apocalpyse, but we've done different lay-outs with tables. We can pool together a number of large folding tables and wood to make a variety of shapes. Capitol T shape, Capitol I shape, and some assemetrical ones.

A fun shape we used had a 4x4 hole in the center so that we could crawl under the table to it and then reach models in the middle of the rather large set up. We called it a thermal vent that was too sporadic to fly over, so all models had to go around it. Fun times...

Edit: I was looking for some pictures but can't find any from our games, sadly.

I only play on 4x4 if the max list is 1k. Most games are played on a 4x6. 2k+ we play on 4x8 usually.

I play on 4x4 all the time, and it isn't my favourite. Namely because I am trying to learn how to run foot guard, and I cannot deploy everyone in my zone without being incredibly vulnerable to any blasts.

This isn't helped by my two regular opponents (the ones who say 'oh no 4x4 is so much better') playing melee heavy armies...and they wonder why I disbelieve that they prefer the board because it is 'fairer'.

I wish I had time for all the game systems I own, let alone want to own...

Way back, GW used to recommend as a guideline that you should have 2' of table for each 500 points.

That being said, you can 'squeeze' a little at larger points limits, particularly with reserves in use. And for Apocalypse, since you have Strategic Reserves and mass carnage happening, you can get a way with a smaller table than the points limits would seem to call for...

4x4 was the standard a while ago. 3rd ed. I think? That's the board size I use, It helps my Orks in close combat to have less area for enemies to hide. Home-field advantage
I think the standard now is like 6x4 or something.

It might have just been my FLGS but in 3rd we always played on 4x8. When it first went to 4x6 being the norm I thought it seemed a bit crowded. Of course small games for us were 2k

Yeah, I don't remember 4x4 being the standard in 3rd.

When we do Appoc, its usually a 12x12, but we leave a hole in the middle of the board so someone can be there to measure and move models. Its just treated as an infinitly deep hole in the game board. So things with enough movement can move and shoot over it.

I think 4x4 is standard for GW stores due to space requirements.

I usually do either 6x4 or 8x4 - the latter is my space at home.
