Hey all Dakka Dakka people. I've been looking at some hordes and Warmachine books and articles for a while and i've started to build up a growing interest for them both, however i have no idea what to get just to get started when it comes to minis. I have already my eyes some what set on Cryx from Warmachine and The legion of Everblight for Hordes.

I would buy one of the Holiday Bundles PP has up for the army of your choice. http://store.privateerpress.com/holidaybundles2012.aspx
The game is nicely balanced overall(with a slight advantage to Hordes because Fury is more powerful) so it really comes down to personal army preference.
Both the Cryx and Legion bundles are a good value. They come with a rulebook and tokens too.
There is no such thing as a bad unit/model in Warmahordes. There are bad combinations though. So some units may not work well with X caster or others are simply more ideal.
The good news is that you can always make a model you like work. So focus on learning the rules and have fun.

As said above, start with warmachine, when you have built up some nicely sized forces move to hordes, it's slightly more complex and warmachine is better for beginners

Join the dark side........
warmachines. Easier to play and lets face it-giant steam powered robots FTW
Cryx do have a bit of a learning curve and its best to focus on one caster until you know where you want to go but once you get the nack of them there a vicous army and really fun to play

here is my 2 sense into the army's,
for warmachine
cryx, tricky army, that seem to have a card up every sleeve, and a card in their invisible sleves, so when you think you have the upper hand they can turn it around and win the game
cygnar, they have " advanced" tech so their jacks are over all better then the others ( does not mean they are the best they have the most balanced stats ) and their biggest advantage is their range shooting, and their lightning shinanagins
khaor, they have some of the highest arm in the game and the best casters that can solo almost anything, they are highly self reliant so you don't need someone to baby sit another unit, also they have no light jacks and they have the some of the best melee in the game
menoth, ... buffs, debuffs, burn, fire, support. these people are crazy that boosts their army an debuffs your army so much that its practicly gg when you see what they have, and its a pain to fight them but its fun to use them, almost everything has a burning effect on it so if you have something immune to fire your going to ignore alot of their weapons
retribution of scyrah, these guys are " future " futurisitc elves that have magical shinangins such as shields and omg death rays, i dont know much about them but their jacks if you take out their shield you taken out a critical skill of there's
mercenaries, these guys can work with anyone so its a super threat also they take all the pluses and all the - from all the armys above because they can go anything so these guys are the jack of the jack of all trades
in hordes
circle, these guys are... odd.. the most i see from them is the stone spam where they can tank everything or the were wolves spam where they rush onto you and rip you appart, so i dont know much saddly
legion of everblight, dragons? gods? someone needs to call dovakin, these guys can either spam small weak units that can become god like in the right hands, or spam godlike creatures that can smash armies, they have some fancy rules like you can spawn other war beasts from the a solo they have
skrone...i hate skorne.., skrone loves pain, pain loves skrone their ifnatry supports them by whipping them to death, and they get buffs from the wippings they get.... how?!?!
troll bloods, IM NOT DEAD YET! these guys all have tough, so when you kill them, they just come right back up if your unlucky, they also hit like a truck, think of khador if they where a bunch of internet trolls
minnons, i have never seen anyone use this army at all so i can give no input on this, sorry
a website you can go to find information on all of these is battlecollege at wiki spaces, they have info on practicly everything,
also i am a khador ( soon to be menoth ) and legion player and welcome to warmachine ( ignore bad spelling and bad grammer >.> )

Actually, Menoth doesn't have alot of weapons with damage type Fire. They have alot of weapons with Fire continious effect or critical effect, so fire immune models arn't immune to many of their attacks, just the continious fire they like to throw out. Only 3 casters have damage type Fire(and only on ranged weapons), 3 Jacks have damage type fire on ranged weapons, and 2 infantry units have ranged weapons with damage type fire.
And only Feora, eFeora, and the Castigator are immune to fire.
So most of the Fire is Continious Effect fire. Which doesn't make the attack itself Fire, so Fire immune models still take damage from the attack itself, they just don't take the Continious effect.
Being Immune to Fire isn't all that useful against Menoth except for some of their spells and a few select models.

I find Cryx with Deneghra are a hideous force for Debuffs-Parasite Crippling Grasp and her Feat-even Khador Jacks best watch out!!!! Oh and she has stealth, reach and armour peircing. If you take Nightmare with her-her personal Jack then so long as it is within her control radius it to has stealth and you can also activate its imprint to give it ghostly for one focus and cast ghost walk on Deneghra for 3 thus giving you arguably one of the best assassination/pinpoint strike teams in the game.
Then you can also throw a pistol wraith or 2 in there-2x R10 Pow12 armour peircing shots at RAT 7 plus if both hit then you get a third attack that does no damage but forces your opponent to sacrifice either there move or action next turn thus crippling a model for a turn. Not much you say? Well if you target a Jack you will stop a vital unit from functioning next turn.
Throw in a couple of cheap Arcnodes such as Nightwretch's and your done
