Some are like Uzas and Vandred, some aren't like Talos and Malcharion.

Follow(ers)?

Anyway... yes, they follow chaos, mainly because they enjoy the carnage of war. Once, before the Heresy, a Night Lords fleet was to invade a planet to quell a rebellion. Instead of that, the commander thought it would be better to bomb the entire planet.

Before and during the heresy they weren't really followers of chaos, they shunned the whole thing, it wasn't until after when Curze was killed and they separated did some of them start turning to chaos. They like killing, they like scaring, they have fun, but they don't need to worship a chaos god to enjoy it

They could still very well be considered renegade marines since they don't worship a pantheon of deities.

Talos mentions they are the way they are because of their Primarch and the Emperor. They fought on Horus's side because they felt the hypocrisy that the Emperor was spouting...

Though I could be wrong.

No Chaos Space Marines "worship" the deities, with the exceptions of Word Bearers.

But that standard, Abaddon isn't a Chaos Space Marine either.

If I remember my fluff night lords mostly (but not all) reject the chaos gods but there are exceptions krieger i believe is a night lord daemon prince of chaos undivided and pre-heresy was a captain of the legion

Sorry I meant to (and thought I did) include a bit about worshiping at least 1 deity as well.

I wouldn't consider the Night Lords, who aren't typically associated with chaos worship, Chaos Space Marines. I would consider them renegade marines, even though other sources of fluff, etc... list renegade marines as chapters rather than include the legions. So by the point they would be Traitor Marines, but again... other sources of the fluff use Traitor marines as a synonym of Chaos Space Marines. That's fine, my interpretation of establish fluff is semantics w/e.

I just don't see them as "Chaos" marines simply due to the lack of worship. I mean even the Iron Warriors worship chaos to some extent. Perturabo is a Daemon Prince of the undivided Ruinous Powers, and so there is some worship, even if it's just worship of their Primarch.

Well Uzas is continually running around saying "Blood for the Blood God" in the books.

Vandred is "The Exalted:" and possessed by a daemon spirit while trying to take control of his body back.

So, while the Night Lords may not have an officially sanctioned patron deity, they most definitely are showing signs of chaos corruption.

Night Lords are definitely Chaos Marines, but they don't follow any particular chaos god. I think of them similar to the Iron Warriors, they use daemons when they are useful, but don't worship them (obvious exceptions being if one is trying to attain daemonhood). They use the daemons because the Night Lords are all about causing fear and daemons are really good at causing that.

As for why they don't follow any particular chaos god, Zso Sahaal says in the Lord of the Night book "there is no god of Fear"

As a whole, the Night Lords never pledged themselves to Chaos like the other Traitor Legions during the Horus Heresy. Rather, they more or less became dedicated to spreading fear/terror in the name of Curze. However since the death of Curze and the shattering of the Legion into disparate warbands, many have fallen to Chaos while many others still hold onto the old ideals of their Primarch.

Overall it's a very divided legion still struggling to find its identity. Whereas the Iron Warriors have a Daemon Prince and hate the Imperial Fists, the Death Guard have the love of Nurgle to spread, and the World Eaters have KILL MAIM BURN, the Night Lords don't really know where they fit in or what to do with themselves.

My Armies:

2,700pts
2,000pts

Yes. But they all do. Abaddon does not worship the Chaos God. He too (thinks he) is using them. That is how 95% of all Chaos Marines do it. They (think they) use Chaos to their ends, and Chaos is happy to return the favour. Give a little, take a little, soon you're doing the will of the Chaos Gods.

Even the Daemon Primarchs like Perturabo follow this patter. Indeed, the Chaos Space Marines that worship the Chaos Gods - i.e. Word Bearers - are the exception here, not the rule.

This is what I believe. Night Lords are more renegade with some Chaos sprinkled throughout.

But they're more than just renegades. They don't just attack people as pirates or for self indulgences (in general, not Slaaneshi), they do so to spread terror and chaos. IMO, a renegade is just someone who turned away from the Imperium but hasn't fully accepted chaos.

Some Night Lords haven't accepted Chaos. Some in the Night Lords Trilogy hated the "Exalted" because he was taken over by a daemon
