So ive done waaaaay too much 40k to the point that im sick of it. So I decided to go bak tomy modeling oroots with some WWII models. When I look at the armies without even reading rules here is what I see...
Germans: Elite infantry that are often outnumbered (Grey Knights)
Soviet Union: Massive ammount of light infantry that are easy to scare (Imperial Guard)
America: Balance (Space Marines)
French: Im geussing they are easy to scare??? It seems that they have alot of anti tank and Anti infantry. I am seeing alot of machine guns models for them. (Tau)
Polish: Hit and Run (Dark Eldar)
So where do I start and what army? Im German-Polski myself but dont see my self playing German anytime soon. Mabye Finnish or Soviet is what im thinking. How are tanks? Can you hold giant games like Apoc im 40k??? Can I use blast templates and blow everything to bits before I run in an then mop up the remaing mess? Regardles of this barage of questions lease explain the game some and the adiffrent countries.

Your evaluations of the different nations are off. First off, take everything you know from 40k and throw it out the window. Don't bring those sorts of conceptions and attitudes to FoW. First, what Period do you want to explore? You've got Early (Fall of France and Poland, Invasion of Russia), Mid (Continuation of fighting in Russia, Fighting in North Africa/Tunisia/Italy), and Late (Normandy, Market Garden, Soviet's push back, and the fall of Germany). Each 'force' has a Morale rating (Reluctant, Confident, and Fearless) and a Training rating (Conscript, Trained, and Veteran). This helps decide your force - a Fearless Veteran army will be more expensive in points (and therefore smaller in size) than a Reluctant Conscript force will. Tanks are tanks - they run the gambit from speedy little Tankettes only armed with a machine gun to massive moving pillboxes that'll break down if you look at them funny. They won't survive without support, however. Don't get an 8-gun artillery battery and expect it to win you the game. In fact, artillery is relatively 'weak' in FoW - you're much better off using it to pin down enemy positions, or drop smoke, before closing in.

I went from 40k toFoW and you can't really compare the factions, especially as they vary over different time periods.
I tend to play late war, and (IMHO) the factions are characterised this way.
Germans - elite equipment but variable troops often Confident vet or reluctant trained depending on the time period
USA - combined arms, fire and manoeuvrability
UK - lot of sub lists (Canada, Poland etc) slow stodgy, long range fire
Russia - hoards, low tech (problems moving and fire vehicles) lack smoke, but some bug heavy tanks!
That's my short impressions.

I have to mention this, the French are actually really fearless so...no they can't be scared easily...and they can make a really strong gun-line if need be.
Anyway, ignore all the comparisons to 40k. Unlike 40k, everything is actually incredibly balanced and it takes A LOT to make things OP'd in one persons favor, and it's usually because someone forgot to bring any combined arms (trying to face tanks with nothing but elite infantry with no AT sucks. A lot).
Really, first decide what aspect you like.
Do you want to fight in the cold on the Eastern Front? Or do you want to liberate Normandy? Maybe take over Africa for the Third Reich? Or become the new Caesar and lead Italy to a new age?
All up to you. Hahaha

They are a horde army, quite similar to the Soviets except that they don't have very good supporting arms.
If you want a small(ish) but elite army then go Finns. If you want hordes go Soviets.

Unless, off course, You want to play Soviet Combat Engineers or other "spetznaz type lists".
And apart of Mid/Early/Late + Morale/Training thingies, there is also the choice of tank/mechanised or infantry list, which allows You to get really specific into what You want to play.

SS units aren't all that elite They can be but just about every nation list at least on par with them.
Pure Tiger lists are in all the LW German books. 6-8 Tigers with a smattering of support, they are a bit of a 1 hit wonder to be honest.

Tigers are too expensive to include anything other than token support although the options are there.

Reaver83 has had quite a bit of experience beating the all tiger list.
I've had quite a lot of experience of being beaten, because I had an all tiger list.
I've also got a quite a bit of experience in selling tigers on ebay.
Hopefully that'll give you some indication of whether you should buy an all tiger list or not.
The only time they were any good, was against non-heavy tankovy and then they munched and munched hard, but apart form that I'd steer well clear.
Nurgle, what period do your mates/opponents play. You've really got to aim to align yourself with them. Then, look for an army no one else has but want to play....You want games, so get something people fancy playing against.

I have to disagree with reaver about Tigers sucking. They may be at a disadvantage against certain lists but they are a terriffic list to start with. You don't have to buy or paint that much to get started. You will understand why certain other builds work well and how you can modify your list as needed. The Tigers are great support so they will never go to waste. Not to mention they are cool models!

The all Tiger list is hard to play because you don't have many models and there are a good few hard counters to Tigers. It's not a good first list, it is a good occasional list.
I run a pair of Tigers in my current all comers 1750 list.

George, do you have your list posted up anywhere or could you pm it to me? I'd be really interested to see it.
Nurgle, have you looked at the army deals that battlefront have started doing...e.g. US 7th Armoured or SS-Kampfgruppe Peiper? Wouldn't be a bad place to start.

A T-34 horde is pretty much the Tiger lists' preferred enemy.
With a nice roll on Tiger Ace I've seen off 20 T-34s with 3 Tigers in about 3 turns.
