So after a couple of weeks of playing with both Island of Blood and Battle for Skull Pass, the former which I bought and the later which a friend of mine purchased both at discounted prices, I've decided to go ahead and select Tomb Kings as my first army, and probably my main, largely due to their lore which kicks a lot of hind.

Problem is I'm pretty new to Warhammer let alone Tomb Kings. I'm pretty inexperienced. My only "real game" (Not IoB or BfSK) was when I played my friend's 1500 point DE army, during which I absolutely got massacred by another equally sized Warriors of Chaos army. Pretty sure it wasn't the army that sucked.

My second problem is I'm on a relatively tight budget. I'm planning to make a 1500 point army. I'm planning to get the TK Battalion boxset but after some extensive reading, I've discovered that the 8 extra Skeleton Horsemen isn't all that good of a deal as it turns out to be. I don't really know if I want them to be in play as I would want to also use every point as much as I can as well, unless of course, they're really necessary.

I'd then proceed to grab a Tomb King and a Screaming Skull Catapult and a box of Skeleton Warriors and Chariots to add to my core. Problem is, I don't know if I should add my tomb king to the chariots units or purchase a tomb guard and add him to that. And how many lords and heroes should a 1500 point army have? Beyond those units, I don't know what's worth getting and what's even worth looking at. Right now, I'm planning for a range heavy build, preferably where I can easily outflank my enemy. Because outflanking kills.

I'll just list my current (planned) army:
Lords
Tomb King (General) - Blade of Anthrak, Armour of Destiny, Shield. = 273 points.

Heroes
Liche Priest (Hierophant, Lore of Nehekhara) - Level 2 Wizard, Scroll of Shielding, Healing Potion = 155 points.

Core
34 Skeleton Archers + Standard Bearer + Musician + Master of Arrow = 252 points.
18 Skeleton Warriors + Standard Bearer = 86 points.
6 Skeleton Chariots + Standard Bearer (Banner of the Eternal Flame) = 370 points

Special
22 Tomb Guard +Standard Bearer + Musician + Tomb Captain = 272 points.

Rare
Screaming Skull Catapult = 90 points.

Total = 1498 points.

Keep in mind Tomb King will be attached to the Tomb Guard

Any advice? Should I swap the 8 Skeleton Horsemen for something else?

Hey.

Hierophant needs Earthing Rod. Keep him cheap

SSCs are best when taken in pairs, because of their nice cost.

I suggest Destroyer of Eternities and Potion of Toughness for your King.

Hey, welcome to the wonderf world of fantasy
I've got some advice on the budget part firstly,
1: the warsphinx is an amazing unit, model it with the tomb guard crew. The box acctually gives you a base for the tomb king so he's pretty much free. So 60$= 240 point monster + tomb king
2:buy the sepulchral stalker/necropolis knights kit. Build the sepulchral stalkers. (There just awesome anyways) but the kit then gives you a LOT of extra bits that will allow you to make impressive looking heroes/lords.
3: buy the empire battle wizards box. You get 2 guys that with very little conversion ( using bits from the previously mentioned box) can become liche priests.)

Now that I've given my two warp tokens on budget, here they are on tactics.
1: the skeleton horse archers are absolutely great, take a unit of 10-12, and then they scout. So they become a very solid unit for war machine hunting.
2: chariots are great, but you have to utilize the "and the tomb kings rode to war" if you want them to be more than a supporting unit. Take anywhere from 6-9. Your doing a lot of strength 5-6 impact hits. If your just using them as supporting units. Do squads of 3, and make sure they flank charge
3: a squad of simple skeleton warriors with a tomb king, and you have a squad of guys at WS 6. It's downright amazing.
4: tomb herald bsb's are good with standard of the undying legion. Put him and your king in a unit of skeletons or tomb guard and you have a high weapon skill regenerating squad of pain.

There's my warp tokens, hope it helps!

If you're looking to create a Tomb King army on a budget I would look at what I ran for a store only 1500 tournament, it is not the typical net list that you will see about but It has a bit of everything so that new players can learn the army

Tomb Prince - 154
Great Weapon, Armour of Silvered Steel, Dragonbane Gem

Liche Priest - 120
Level 2, Lore of Nehekhara, Opal Amulet

Liche Priest - 90
Level 1, Lore of Death, Dispel Scroll

39 Skeleton Warriors - 176
Musician, Standard Bearer

15 Skeleton Archers - 100
Musician

15 Skeleton Archers - 100
Musician

4 Necropolis Knights - 280
Champion, Musician

3 Sepulchral Stalkers - 165

Screaming Skull Catapult - 90

Screaming Skull Catapult - 90

Casket of Souls - 135

Total Roster Cost - 1500

Shopping list for the army is something like

Tomb King
Liche Priest x 2 (or Necromancer model with head swap)
Batallion
2 x Archers (warrior boxes)
2 x Knights/Stalker Boxes (plus 1 from bits stores)
2 x SSC
Casket
