I like the Black Templars a ton, how would you start them. This will be my first army as I am new the the hobby.

Also any suggestions for others armies will be taken into consideration.

Chaplains are great HQ's for Templars, also make use of land speeder typhoons as at 70points they are an absolute steal.

5 man terminators with either 2 ACs or 2 CMLs are also a must.

Checkout other peoples lists and these are usually the things that crop up in all of them.

You should start three seperate "Starting BT" threads, forget all the advice I give you, and then start some "Starting DA or Chaos" threads.

The good news is that you have great taste. From a fluff and appearance perspective, Black Templars are about as awesome as they come.

Now for the bad news. Black Templars have the oldest codex that is still in use, and are not a "competitive" army.

That being said, Warhammer 40k is generally a poorly balanced game that is not well suited for competitive play. Therefore, my recommendations are to either stick with Black Templars since they appeal to you despite being a poor choice competitively, or play a different game entirely if you are looking for a more competitive wargaming experience.

Now, assuming you stick with Templars, some good buys would be a couple boxes of tactical marines, a box of terminators, a captain or chaplain, an emperor's champion, and a vindicator. This will give you enough points to play a 1000 point game, and will provide you will a solid base of useful models to expand into larger lists.

I'd buy a Codex Space Marine book and use that until the Black Templars get an update.

Yeah, lawlet you've started 3 or 4 threads on which army to choose/start. I understand you don't know want to invest in an army you may not like, but I think you should put all of your questions in one thread, and you can always edit it if you think of more.

Sorry can't disclose.....infiltrating

Things we have that are good, mostly because of age,

Our terminators can have 2 heavy weapons per 5 men and a veteran skill such as tank hunters

We can take 3 man bike squads with 3 plasma guns for 114 pts, something I absolutely love.

We still have rites of battle at ld 10 for cheap, though I prefer chaplains for the ability to control your army's movement, grimaldus is a good at this if you decide to have lots of crusaders

We are a fairly mobile foot based army from rigeteous zeal, though again this should be controlled with fearless, and chaplains as to not let a smart opponent out maneuver you

Though if you want to be more competitive, not saying you will he top tier or anything but allies can help with this

Most of all love an army because of its fluff and feel, rather than its relative power level, or you will find yourself changing armies, like your socks

This here is the best advice you'll ever see on the matter. What you buy miniature wise to start your army, no matter which army, should also be informed by this first and foremost. Going off the assumption that you're interested in starting BT for their look/feel/fluff etc, I'd recommend; a couple of tactical squads, a couple of scout squads, a couple of BT upgrade sprues, a chaplain, an Emperor's Champion, a Land Raider Crusader (or two), and either a Sword Brethren or Terminator squad (or two/one of each). This will give you a solid, fluffy base for a BT force.

Homebrew Imperial Guard: 1222nd Etrurian Lancers (Winged); Special Air-Assault Brigade (SAAB)
Homebrew Chaos: The Black Suns; A Medrengard Militia (think Iron Warriors-centric Blood Pact/Sons of Sek)

but if he does that, he will forget this piece of advice here before he starts the Chaos thread and go back to make another "Starting BT" thread creating an enless cycle
