Subject: Command squad load-outs

I'm currently in the process of making a space marine command squad on bikes to accompany my captain but I can't decide whether to make them assault orientated with power weapons, shooty with plasmas or a mixture of shooty and assaulty. Should I give them storm shields or would this be a waste of points?
The rest of army consists of 2 bike squads (5 bikes with 2 plasmas and MM attack bike each), a 10 man tactical squad in a rhino with melta and missile launcher, 5 scouts with snipers and a missile launcher, a land speeder with HB/AC, 2 attack bikes and an assault squad (probably going to replace these guys with more bikes at some point).
Any advice?

“Because we couldn’t be trusted. The Emperor needed a weapon that would never obey its own desires before those of the Imperium. He needed a weapon that would never bite the hand that feeds. The World Eaters were not that weapon. We’ve all drawn blades purely for the sake of shedding blood, and we’ve all felt the exultation of winning a war that never even needed to happen. We are not the tame, reliable pets that the Emperor wanted. The Wolves obey, when we would not. The Wolves can be trusted, when we never could. They have a discipline we lack, because their passions are not aflame with the Butcher’s Nails buzzing in the back of their skulls.
The Wolves will always come to heel when called. In that regard, it is a mystery why they name themselves wolves. They are tame, collared by the Emperor, obeying his every whim. But a wolf doesn’t behave that way. Only a dog does.
That is why we are the Eaters of Worlds, and the War Hounds no longer."

How is your captain armed? If they're going to be a close combat squad some synergy would be a good idea.

In that case he's also an all-rounder, so the question becomes what do you feel your army needs? Do you have problems dealing with heavy armour? Monsterous creatures? Hoards? shifting enemy units off objectives? Dealing with big nasty characters?
I'm interested in the answers myself as I'm going through exactly the same process

I have something in my army that can deal with any eventuality (I hope). I have plasma to deal with 2+ saves and big nasty things, multi-meltas and a lascannon pred to deal with armour, dakka land speeders and attack bikes to deal with infantry and hoards, sniper scouts for precision shot and home objective holding and a tac squad in a rhino for objective capture/support.
I guess I'm lacking in close combat units so that could be a good way to go. I could give them all power weapons and maybe give one a power fist for a bit of extra punch. Do you think it would be worth 15 points each to give them storm shields for a 3+ invulnerable? They will have FNP from the apothecary too.

Go all bikes if your going o role a captain on a bike, I like 4 plasmas in the comand squad, abuse combat tactics and win.

Im in the same boat, still tinkering with different loadouts and find the best fit.
I tried the CC beatstick which sounds awesome, but I had minimal success (mainly the opponent knowing they were a heavily invested unit) and got shot to pieces before hitting combat at full capacity. I had power weapons galore, TH, and SS.
Plasmas also were quite attractive so I did a plas spam. I really disliked this. I know people have bad rolling games, but I literally am TERRIBLE with plasmas. EVERY. GAME. I killed 3 bikers by turn three... yes, half the squad. Yes.. they had FNP too... I have no success with that gun. Pass.
Lastly, out of frustration, I made a flamer spam squad. Surprisingly went well. The cap had a TH IIRC, a champion for challenges, and flamers out the wazoo. I liked that, and a bit cheaper too.

Drop Trooper with Demo Charge
|
I have recently been running a command squad with attached captain, and Chaplain.
Squad has lightning claws, storm shields and storm bolters.
The storm bolters are very cheap and add a nice bit of firepower to weaken up a charge target.
(Odviously just for causal games)
This unit can odviously eat anything in close combat. However the problem is not getting shot.
I use a land raider to deliver them into combat so that is usualy okay. However they will usualy wipe their target on the first turn, leaving them open and exposed to return fire.
One thing I have considered is leaving a few bodies un-upgraded. These will catch the first few wounds that come in, so the upgraded units survive to do damage in close combat.
