I find that I use gold paint a lot on my minis and the GW stuff is just too thin for my likes (Auric Armor I believe). Some times it turns out blotchy or even lumpy. I've done layering the gold over a yellow or brown as well as later washing it with devlan mud for a warmer color. It's just not to my liking. Are there any good substitute brands or a good technique to get a good gold effect on minis?

I've had really good results using the Vallejo Model Color golds.

If you're prepared to go to a bit of extra effort Vallejo Liquid Gold metallics are the best I've ever used, one coat coverage over any sensible basecoat and actually looks like gold, the extra effort comes in when cleaning up/remembering not to lick your brush- The paint is alcohol based so you have to thin and wash brushes with alcohol too, I suspect it is also a bit harsher on brushes as a result but I haven't had any problems with my brushes yet. You will also find that the pigment settles out quite easily as it's so fine, needing a really good shaking to remix the solvent with the pigment.

The "Old Gold" colour is a current favorite of mine but they are all pretty good.

They also appear quite pricey compared to normal acrylic paints but they come in 35ml pots rather than the 17ml Vallejo droppers (or the incredibly stingy 12ml GW pots)

I've had terrible results with the new GW golds as well. My auric armor even separated after about a week and is now useless. Only the Balthasar Gold seems to cover well.

Vallejo Liquid gold line.

Bear in mind it's a very unique paint and you will need to use 95+% Alcohol instead of water, and be very careful applying it(or it'll just rust).
But it looks gorgeous.

im still using the ones before the paint update. burnished gold and shining gold i believe. im almost out and was planning to switch to the new ones

are they really that terrible? after it seperates its ruined, you cant stir it back to life?

coverage isnt an issue for me. they are designed to go ontop of balthasar to add extra vibrance and shine, not as a basecoat.

For the auric gold, stirring didn't do anything for it. It just runs right off whatever I put it on without even watering it down.

As others have said, Vallejo Liquid Gold is great, if a bit harder to use. Vallejo Model Air metallics are next best, go on great, look great and very easy to use.

I'm using Reaper paints now, but Coat'D arms is good too. Hasselfree is starting to carry Coat'D arms i think. It's the company that made paint for GW three paint editions ago, when it was very good paint.

And it was also the best paint pots GW ever had.
