Hey all, I've been using some of the paints from GW's new Citadel range, and while I love some of their Base and Glaze paints, I've been having trouble with some of their Layer paints. Namely, I've been using Warpstone Glow and Skarsnik Green as layers for my Ork skin, so they've been used over appropriate basecoats. However, I cannot work out if thinning is required or not. No matter if I use it straight from the pot, or if I thin it, the Layer paints seem to have poor coverage, and are quite lumpy with very visible brush strokes. Even the texture of it doesnt feel quite right (might have to do with the lumpiness). Coverage seems to be better if I paint in multiple coats, but the layer isnt smooth and even.

Has anyone had similar experiences? What are you opinions? should I use some sort of medium? Or stay away from the range altogether? I've been using some P3 paints as well and they work great, and thinking of trying out some Vallejo if these Citadel paints continue to be so.. awkward.

Almost all painting should be done in multiple coats... if you are just using one coat, you are probably doing it wrong. I have a couple pots of the newer GW paints and they still need to be thinned; just a drop of clean water is enough.

Layer paints intentionally have less pigment than base paint, as it's meant to be on top of a complementary color.

Though the problem I have with them is that indeed, some of the new pots are lumpy as all heck. I have some White Scar white that is has little tiny lumps all through it right from the store and it's a pain to thin and sort out the lumps. It feels like something is off in the mixing process with some of them.

My Ceramite White, otoh, is perfectly fine. I haven't had a bad base yet, some layers are good, but I've noticed that most problem paints from the Citadel range have always been Layer paints for me.
