Is the Necron Monlith any good. It looks solid on paper but with the new rules and stuff is it worth taking. Also if another thread is about this could you send the link to me.Then what job is it best at

It's not exactly good, I'd say it's ok. If enough people keep going away from melta, It will have it's time to shine for a bit.

The monolith is the only necrons vehicle with good armour. It's weapons are pretty bad, but the portal and deepnstrike make it a good drop pod like item.

Dichotomies of "good" and "bad" don't really work for the Monolith.

It's more a question of "does the Monolith have any uses?" And the answer is yes.

EDIT: it's a support unit.

All necron vehicles except for the Monolith and Flyers have Quantum Shielding, meaning they are 13/13/11 until they suffer from a penetrating hit, which is not exactly bad armour (AV13 has no trouble dealing with most things). Additionally, although it can function as a pseudo drop-pod, it costs 200 points, doesn't have any resilience to deep strike mishaps like the drop pod does and without drop pod assault it might not arrive by deep strike until turn 4, by which time whatever you may have wanted to port could be either dead or otherwise engaged.

Overall, the Monolith is by no means 'bad'. It's an AV 14 box with a decent but not amazing main gun that chews through MEQ. However, it doesn't really fit with a lot of other things in the codex. The Doom Scythe works well with Night Scythes and provides fast, precision damage, the Spider synergizes with Scarabs, and the Annihilation Barge is just good, and as a result the Monolith is kinda the heavy option left out in the cold.

The monolith is good but you have to know how to use it and play to its strengths. Basically it's a good tank if you build your list around it, and it's not so good if you just throw it on a list because you have 200pts left over.

The strengths of the monolith are that it is huge and acts like a great mobile LOS blocking cover. You can use this to effectively screen your army as well as hide certain elements from fire, for instance a c'tan or scarab farm.

Basically nowadays if your going to take a monolith you should always take some spyders to replace any lost hull points and make it even more resilient to most firepower(plus giving you back your gun if it's destroyed). The spyders will help to keep the monolith alive while the monolith can help to hide the spyders to keep them alive, and you can bring some scarabs so that the spyders can pump up their numbers while the scarabs can screen the monolith from melta weapon while they search for a target to assault.

The monolith is a support unit to your army as your not paying for it's killing potential alone but the other advantages it brings you. If your just interested in killing potential there are superior option in the codex that are more efficient on a per point basis.

If you search for monolith on the tactics forum there should be a few discussions about the lith. A relatively recent one with opinions for and against the monolith is here http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/490414.page

The monolith has too less utitily in a Necron army, or you have to design the army around it. It competes with better HS choices like Annihilation Barges or Doom Scythes, or even Doomsday Arks.
