I love the Maulerfiends.
DP is themey, but not as effective as you'd think (T5 with a 3+)
Hellbrutes... have disappointed me everygame. Did you factor in that they're 100 points, not 105 like printed in the codex?

im planning something similar to this... but going nurgle (counts as). Typhus with some plague marines, is a good tank unit that can march up the board for an objective. 2-4 small units of zombies to come off reserve and walk onto objectives. Also you could ally daemons, they do flying mc's better.
i agree on the hellbrutes... sadly they are a subpar unit. and i recommend the multimelta loadout.

I too was sadly disappointed by the mauler fiends. I like the models and some of the rules, BUT....
WS 3 and I3 kills you. 3 attacks, 4 on the charge that usually hit on 4s. You can try the daemonforge rule, but you need to declare that before you roll any to hit dice whatsoever. Actually, if I recall, you need to declare that at the beginning of the shooting / assault phase. So, you declare this before you even roll charge dice.
Monstrous Creatures smash you before you can do anything.
Fiends will rend you apart.
Meltabombs and powerfists still smash your face in.
And this is all assuming your maulerfiend survives crossing the board to get into close combat in the first place.
I do think you could tailor a list to make them work, but I doubt it would ever be more than an average list at best.

I think forgefiends are better than maulerfiends. The ability to shoot is pretty powerful, even if the range is somewhat limited. In CC you are still decent against basic units.

The most important rule of 40K-Page XVII of the 6th edition rulebook, the figure at the top right of the page. "Shake hands with your opponent and thank them for a good battle and fun experience." Then go out for a beer.
