I did up a list in AB just to see if it would be possible to bring a full Space Marine Battle Company into a 2k game. I managed to squeak it in (minus Command Squad, Dreadnoughts, and Transports)) with a few points to spend on wargear for the Captain. Just wondering on how effective it may be. Here it is:

HQ:
Captain (140 pts, based around the AOBR model)
Boltgun, Power Sword, Hellfire Rounds, & Arificer Armor

Troops:
Tactical Squad X's 6 (170 pts ea.)
10 Models, Flamer, ML, SGT has BP/Chainsword

Fast:
Assault Squad X's 2 (190 pts ea.)
10 Models, SGT has BP/Chainsword

Heavy:
Devastator Squad X's 2 (230 pts ea.)
10 Models, 4 ML, SGT has Boltgun/Bolt Pistol

This gives me 2k even and 101 Space Marines on the table. I know that it's lacking in firepower to reliably down AV14 (can do it, but only on Glancing hits reducing Hull Points to Wreck the vehicle). The only other downside I can think of is no AP2 firepower, but I feel it makes up for it in weight of fire to drown 2+ armor in saves. Despite that, it has anti-horde and anti-mech (AV13 or less), can sit back and shoot while maintaining a counter assault ability, and (thanks to the new Rapid Fire and Snap Shots rules) can also serve to go on the attack to weaken enemy armies on the way in to melee and be successful in melee while scoring a Linebreaker secondary objective and plenty of Troops to capture other objectives (or, if need be, Combat Squad to camp heavy weapons in the backfield while leaving most of the Boltguns and SGT's, and all of the Flamers to go on the attack or capture objectives).

One alternative I can think of is to drop the 40 points of Wargear off of the Captain, and give all of the SGT's except the Devastator SGT's Melta Bombs for walker protection and anti-vehicle power in melee.

I'd like to hear your thoughts on this possibility.

Do you really need x2 assault squads like that? For a second I thought you where a blood angel player.

heck, you could go blood angel like this.

"Do you really think 7th edition was the best edition?"

"Yes, and I'm tired of thinking otherwise."

If you stick to Battle Company organization, you need 6 Tac Squads, 2 Assault Squads, and 2 Devastator Squads.

I normally run more Assault Squads, especially when I bring my IA8 list.

It is a total bolter porn list. If you have good finesses and board feel, I think you could do okay to pretty good with this list. One important trick will be to remeber to always break in the opponents assault phase so you can get back in to position to gun him down.

On the Tac squads I would swap some of the ML for either the HB, or the Multi Melta, probably going with 2 of each and no change in points.

Personally i would change the 2 Devastators squads for 2 ten men Tactical squad with Lascannon/Plasma cannon and Meltas/Multi Meltas and combat squad them to get close range Anti Armour and also Long Range Anti Armour .

Other wise your list has enough fire-power to lay wast to most of the Non MEQ lists

Some lists would suffer against that much power armor but your not mobile, you can't really crack av 14 (you only have 14 S8 shots) you will have a hard time dealing with av 13 so god help you if you are up against 2+ vindicators or some iron clads.

GarretAsh,
I'm already looking at 6 Tac squads in the list, and really don't have the points left to go double FOC. The only reason I was able to fit a full Battle Company into 2k is by going with the cheapest/freebie wargear. I start dropping Lascannons, Plasma Cannons, and Melta Guns into the list, I'd be going over on points or having to drop entire squads to add in the expensive wargear.

Barnowl,
I can see a possible reason to go with the MM over the ML on a couple of squads, but I do see where it would clash with my basic tactics for the list (sit back and shoot). Where the MM shines is within 12" of it's target, gaining the extra D6 AP Melta bonus. When moving the MM, I'm losing an accurate shot. When using the MM as intended in a foot list, I feel that it would only be a 1 hit wonder, go in, take the shot, get the 2D6 for AP, kill a big mean nasty vehicle, then die a horrible painful death. That is, unless thrown in a Transport. As for the HB, I think the ML would be better over it because it's tactically flexible. Meaning it can go from Anti-Vehicle to anti-horde by going from Krak to Frag and back again. Either way, all options are something to consider and playtest.

As for the effectiveness of the list, I kinda figured it would be against infantry armies (maybe even other MEQ infantry armies), but run into issues against mech heavy armies.

If you can kill it with massed bolter fire, you will do fine. And enough bolter fire will kill just about everything...

In a massive farewell to 5th game, I fielded my battle company at 3k points. It's much more comfortable at that point scale. You can have your wargear, dreads, command squad, chaplain, transports, etc. At 2k you really are just squeezing in. It doesn't do the company much justice to go to battle that bare-bones.

Honestly I kind alike the idea of it, but you definately need to find a solution for AV13+ that doesn't involve glances. I would go MMs as stated since even though it won't help you much against some of the higher AV ranged threats, it will help a lot with land raiders and to a lesser degree vindicators.

Honestly, the resurgence of Vindicators and the reduced cover is what has me most scared for this type of list. Unfortunately, not really possible to fix unless you go higher points or are willing to break up the theme a bit to make it more capable.

Actually, I've done up the points cost for an entire chapter with wargear, including the Armory and Fleet Command (Thunderhawks) based on the Chapter Organization listed in the current Space Marine Codex, and it came up to about 112,000 points. Infantry wise (not counting Apothecaries, Librarians, Chapter Command, or Techmarines/Servitors), yeah, about 30,000 points.

I had not thought much about swapping the ML, till I started going foot heavy against necron lists. The multimelta strength and higher AP came in handy even on the backfeild objective holder, and the extra rounds on the HB have increased the usefulness of the Hvy on the move. I do agree the ML does have flexibility and the changes are very play style dependent.

I haven't really thought about it that way. That's why we post here. Then again, the AP1 on the MM would also be nice for the off chance off getting a Penetrating Hit at 24" on an AV13 or less for it's +2 on the Damage Chart.

Nice amount of footsloggers... I'd take a ML from each devo squad, swap half tactical squad ML for MM or HB, then get rid of the Captain, make him Khorsarro khan, and outflank half your army... If you don't do Scars, just make your own model and tell people he's your own character...

I like it. It would definitely give my 2k point army a hard time only having 36 infantry models and 3 vehicles (one of which is a rhino).

“Because we couldn’t be trusted. The Emperor needed a weapon that would never obey its own desires before those of the Imperium. He needed a weapon that would never bite the hand that feeds. The World Eaters were not that weapon. We’ve all drawn blades purely for the sake of shedding blood, and we’ve all felt the exultation of winning a war that never even needed to happen. We are not the tame, reliable pets that the Emperor wanted. The Wolves obey, when we would not. The Wolves can be trusted, when we never could. They have a discipline we lack, because their passions are not aflame with the Butcher’s Nails buzzing in the back of their skulls.
The Wolves will always come to heel when called. In that regard, it is a mystery why they name themselves wolves. They are tame, collared by the Emperor, obeying his every whim. But a wolf doesn’t behave that way. Only a dog does.
That is why we are the Eaters of Worlds, and the War Hounds no longer."
