Subject: Screen resolution help...

So I just upgraded to Win7 and suddenly I can't reach the screen resolution that I am trying to get (1280x768). Sometimes when I put my computer to sleep and it comes back it'll randomly have the option along with a dozen other resolution options. But NORMALLY it only has 4 options: 1280x800 (which rather than crunching to the screen size it just cuts off part of the top and bottom), 1024x768 (which is annoyingly small), 832x624, and 800x600.
I'm running a 4850 Radeon, I've installed Catalyst from their website and I still randomly just can't get 1280x768. I know that one of my fellow nerds on here can offer some help! All of my normal computer-help options are baffled. Help?

Heading right into the obvious... Have you updated your drivers? If you have, rollback, or reinstall it, and any peripheral programs that accompany it. That will narrow it down a bit..You could also try using the monitor without a driver (by disabling it), but unless you have another monitor, that could be dangerous. I know some systems can use things without a driver, depending on what it is (like a mouse, or a flash drive). 1280x768 is a miserably small resolution. I had to use a netbook at around that size, and I could hardly fit a chrome window on the page. I might be wrong, but I think there's a freeware out there to force a certain resolution. There must be. It's a fairly simple thing.

No idea.
I'm running 1440x900 on my W7 comp.
Flatscreen 21" (I think) - I got it a couple of years ago.
Running a radeon HD 4550 (so not even in the same league as your GFX card).
Computer auto selected this rez from what the monitor could do and I've stuck with it.

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).
Old enough to know better, young enough to not give a ****.

Yeah my drivers are up to date and all the programs to force a screen resolution don't seem to work on Win7.... And 1280x768 isn't that bad at all considering I have an older monitor.
If anyone has any other ideas they would be appreciated!

How is your monitor attached to your computer? If it's DVI/HDMI, it sounds like it's reporting valid resolutions wrongly. If it's VGA, then it sounds like there's something bizarre going on with the mechanism your drivers are using for detecting the valid resolutions.
Are you positive that's the native resolution for that monitor?

It is indeed VGA. I actually looked it up and the native resolution is actually 1440x900, however I can't reach that either! At 1280x800 half of my taskbar is off the screen and loose the same distance at the top! So really I need to bump it to
1440x900 (My bad!) but still can't do that.
