The rules state that templates may not be placed in such a way that they touch friendly units, or units in combat, although they may scatter onto those units.

Purple Sun lets you place the template, then move it (3 x Artillery Die) in any direction you choose. Can you choose to move it over units in combat?

Vortices are an exception, they don't have a target, so you can actually hit your own models with it. You are prefectly allowed to fire it through a combat.

Heck, you can even have a wizard in a combat cast purple sun and mow down his enemies.

Indeed, its quite funny if you tarpit a unit with zombies and fire purple sun up it hehe.
