Increasingly, I have come across the term 'Leaf Blower' on the forum, what I have gleaned, is that it means an army comprised of nothing but shooting units or alternatively lots of the same unit. However, I don't want to just assume I know what it means, and I would like it if someone could tell me what it meant.

Thanks in advance.

It's an IG army that won a major tournament (thanks in large part to luck with always getting the first turn) back in the early days of 5th edition, when C:SM and IG were the only armies with a 5th edition codex. The term is meaningless now, the army has ceased to exist after years of changes in the metagame.

The reference, if still (obsoletely) used, is Chimeraspam backed by tanks/artillery.

It 'leafblew' people off the table because Mech was king of 5th.

Now it just kindof blows (see what I did there? Do ya?), because Mech is much more vulnerable.

Well, it's lost a lot of it's meaning, but it's still around - sort of a linguistic ghost pointing the direction of a mostly forgotten list. I hear it used to cover nearly any kind of shooting heavy list that relies on serious first turn damage (usually IG). Like the "clown car" designation it is used pretty frequently by folks who have only the haziest idea what it actually meant, so the actual origin may not be that much help deciphering what they mean.

I always thought it was because a leman russ turret looks a bit like a leafblower.

Actually it was so good because mech wasn't king yet, since IG and C:SM were the only books with 5th edition prices for transports. So most people weren't prepared for the kind of tank spam that mech IG can bring, making the glass cannon approach a lot safer. And with target saturation providing strong defense the leafblower list was free to focus on maximizing firepower. Once everyone started taking transport spam they also started spamming anti-transport weapons, and could take the leafblower's alpha strike and still hit back hard enough to win.

Of course mech IG was still good for all of 5th and continues to be good in 6th, but "leafblower" only properly applies to the time when you could show up with mech IG and effortlessly massacre 4th edition lists.

The Leafblower

Please note that even the original article already said this!

Darkwynn went to Chicago aware of the strengths and weaknesses of this army against any sort of foe, and was fortunate enough to be able to capitalize on his strengths and bring home the 2009 Ard Boyz Championship.

Emphasis mine.
