Ok, here's my dilemma. I have Army Builder and the license is expired. Now, Army Builder is in trouble with Games Workshop for copyright infringement so I definitely do not want to renew my license. WH40k Maintainers has been my source for new patches and updates for a long time but now they are requiring you to use the update function in Army Builder to get their files. I would like to get the third-party file but I don't wanna pay $50 to an illegal company to do so.

tl;dr

I don't want to renew my license to Army Builder to use a third-party file. Does anyone have the newest WH40k Maintainers file that they could share (v 1.11)? Thanks

So your solution to a perceived IP rights violation by one company is to violate the IP rights of a second company? Doesn't that seem kind of hypocritical to you?

No, their updates were free until now. After GW got all huffy about AB they decided to launder their files through AB I presume to protect themselves. If WH40k Maintainers is non-profit how does it hurt them if I don't want to give my money to AB or Lone Wolf?

This is sorta news to me. I know the pretty much stripped all the special rules out of the 40k stuff leaving you with stats (which can be argued as fair use) and telling you to reference whatever specific codex for any special rules (you even have to reference the brb to get main rules as well) if they stopped putting it out there, I guess Ill just resort to the old fashioned way of doing it or use one of the free sites out there.

My licence ran out a long time ago. It still authenticates, but doesn't allow automatic updates, so I have to install them manually. It's not a huge drama, just download the file and import it... Unless I am missing your problem.

I just checked it myself (as my AB ran out over a year ago) and yes it worked just fine, But I think the OP is somehow either worried hes supporting an Illegal company (if you check the story behind why AB works the way it does, you wouldn't worry too much. They have tried to work with GW on numerous occasions and took legal advice before even allowing 40k data files)

The situation is pretty much another case of GW using their monetary and legal weight to push people out of the way that are thorns in their side. AB isn't some sinister product company, they just provide a product that people want and GW doesn't like it when you don't want their products instead. (I still dont understand why people buy GW gloss varnish when only a little more gets you 20 times as much at the hobby store).

GW basically wants you to buy their brushes, their paint, their models, and thier army building software. There is really nothing wrong with this concept, just that its a bit of a delusional one in the way they go about it. Almost seems like GW believes wholeheartedly they created toy soldier games in the first place.

Who cares? They have every right to put any limits they like on how you obtain their updates. If you get around that and copy the files from someone else without paying for it, you're violating their IP rights.

No dilemma at all. Within Army Builder, go to the Help menu and select "View Latest Updates on Website". Click on the link to "Supplemental Downloads". Download the file you want. Once downloaded, you can double-click the file to launch Army Builder and import it. Alternately, from within Army Builder, you can go to the Tools menu and select "Import Files". Select the file you downloaded and it will be imported. Either way, you're now ready to use the latest 40K files. No license extension required.
