Recently I played a game against 'cron flyer spam/scarab farm. The opponent was hiding really well (the terrain was set up in such a way that he could.) and I was whittling away at his spyders while he simply buffed up his scarab swarms. (He was replenishing 9 a turn, I was killing about 4 a turn with bolter fire, he had enough bases to just keep spamming.) and nothing happened. He was within striking distance (for beasts, about 19") and there was no way I would charge him. Our flyers would come on board, then go off soas not to get shot down (it'd probably hurt him more if his flyers were shot down since they could claim objectives by dropping infantry, but I wasn't about to let him gain aerial superiority.)
The game was literally stalemate. He was holding 3 objectives, I was holding 3 objectives.
Really, has anyone ever had a situation like this where there was no reasonable way to resolve the situation without horrendous losses on one or either side? He was a conservative player and so was I. (goddamn his aegis defence line blocking LOS of swarms...)
I do believe that I have had my first true stalemate.
If you were curious, eventually, my LR came on board and he decided that he would assault. IF he got into charge, he would surely knock out 2 troop choices, all my heavy support and my LR in one fell swoop.
He rolled charge range, rolls a 1 and a two.
Re-rolls both dice, rolls a one and a two again!
so, I ended up slaughtering his scarab swarms and his spyders didn't last long once I could assault. That said, he won the game in the end when I just didn't have enough turns to knock out all of his flyers.
