Okay, so here's my custom chapter. All of theses models are WIP, but almost finished. However, I have no idea how to base them. I want something that gives a bit of contrast, to bring the models out, and I'm not very happy with the basing of either the dread, or the chapter master/vulcan. Any ideas?

Thanks.

Perhaps you could do a primarily red-colored base. Either do something with a volcanic / molten style, or maybe simply just a Mars-soil kinda color of a blasted wasteland.
The warm reds would be at contrast with your cool blues, greys, and whites. I don't know how it would end up looking exactly, but I think it would look pretty interesting.

Yeah, i've been thinking about red-ish bases as well. I think it would complement the color scheme. I tried to make the stone brown-red on the dread, but I don't think it's enough. I like the lava idea, but I think it might be too much. Mars-soil is another idea, but it sounds kind of muted. Dunno, lava, sounds good aesthetically, but I don't like the actual idea of soldiers fighting on lava.

Here's what I do for reddish brown bases. Mix Tallarn flesh with scorched brown. Highlight with pure Tallarn(either edge it of dry brush) then wash with devlan mud. Great paint job by the way.

Take a sand color and then take a deep red that is brownish and dry brush that onto it. Looks great and the sand color gives excellent contrast for depth.

The paint job is great, I think putting any type of bright color on a base against the color of your guys would take away from it. I like the idea of a darkish red/brown sand. The lava would take away from the models.

Great looking marines. I have to go with the already expressed 'the dark brown/red looks good' opinion. I've always been a bit of a minimalist when it comes to basing, too. The focus should be on the model, not what it stands on. The dark colors enhance your chosen paint scheme, giving it a dark background to be compared to. I like how it looks (and your painting on your marines looks great).
