Well your doing the right thing first then
In terms of choosing your chapter / colours, well thats based on personal preference, some people like the original chapters (like me) i've gone with the Ultramarines, but if you think your creative enough, you could try and pick some totally random colours, mash them together and come up with your own army name, chapter and logo. Unfortunately I am not gifted with creativity lol!
Either way, good luck with your army, hope to see some pics soon.

In regards to marines, when you say Space Marine do you mean Codex: Space Marines or just a loyalist wearing power armor? Each of the codexes has a couple things they do particularly well, so look through the Army Lists/Tactics to get an idea of each!
