Hey all,

A quick question here: I'm currently finishing some chariots for my Tomb Kings, and want to glue the painted chariots onto the painted base & horses. Will the plastic cement hold a decent bond through the paint, or do I need to superglue them? Unfortunately removing the paint on the affected sections isn't practical, especially when I come to attach crew to the chariots.

I'd say to use superglue because plastic cement won't bond paint to the plastic.

I would probably use superglue. Plastic glue doesn't seem to bond as well if the area is already painted from my experience.

At this point I just use superglue for everything.

In this case you'll want to use superglue as regular plastic cement doesn't work very well on painted models. You need bare plastic on both pieces where they touch so the plastic glue can weld them together.

Okay, thanks for the help guys! Here's hoping that I don't mess up and get unsightly white superglue splodges everywhere :<

With the superglue over paint - you might get a little frosting...usually it is worse if it is exceptionally humid. Normally it ends up shiny when I do it (just slightly more shiny around the edges of the glued area).

Hit it with some Dullcote and it is all good.

You could also just scrape a bit of the paint off of the mating surfaces and use plastic glue. Remember if you use superglue now, you are gluing paint to paint, not plastic to plastic. It will definitely be a weaker bond.

I just scrape off excess paint and use plastic cement, if you can't do that for whatever reason, plastic cement will soften paint as well, so you can just press it in firmly and it should be fine. If you apply plastic cement with a needle, as you apply it you'll remove some of the paint since the glue softens it, that should be sufficient for most joints.

For really critical joints, I'd just clean the paint off first, that'll give you the best bond regardless of whether you're using superglue or plastic cement. Personally I don't like using superglue because it can frost and it still can break easily and will take the paint with it.
