I'm thinking of adding a tech-marine to a Sternguard squad so they can protect him in there landraider while they are moving up the field.

But i can only find mention of HQ choices joining squads since the tech-marine is an IC could he join my Sterngaurds?

Afaik, yes as the IC rule is on the model but no if he has a load of servitors cos that makes him a squad.

A wolf lord has specific permission to join a unit when he is a squad with his fenrisian wolves.

It's not the size of the blade, it's how you use it.
