I am in a gaming group that usually plays card games, board games and RPGs. Each member usually buys whatever games they want and we play the ones we like continuously.
Having been a 40k player in the past, I have plenty of wargaming gear and a 6x4 gaming table. I was wondering if it was worth it to purchase several armies for Warmahordes and introduce the game to the group. I know quite a bit about Warmahordes and understand how different each army build is and I was wondering how I should go about buying miniatures (buying a bunch of random stuff or giving each army a specific build/strategy)?

Thanks in advance.

Why not get both the Warmachine and Hordes two player boxes? It gives you 4 starter army's everyone can try out for under $200 with two rules books and all.

Would be better if you could expand that table out to 4x8, then
you could play two games side by side.

IN all honesty, the game really, really shines on a very fun level with just batleboxes, its not 40k where you're super encouraged to go balls-deep with your army, battlebox games are short and fun and get you into things.

really I think the game is pretty perfect at its base level without madness like winterguard death stars supporting conquest, ect.

I don't think I would go deeper than the two-player starters out of my own pocket, but if it catches on you could encourage your friends to get their own armies and possibly treat it like an elaborate and expandable board game.

Another option if money is a concern is Malifaux. Starter boxes are $25-30. And it is a pretty awesome game, too. More on the Mordheim level where you have 6-12 models.

Warmachine is definitely a worthy investment, and once people get used to it, it catches on really well. Hell, two years ago we had one guy with a couple of armies show us the game, now our group has a dozen people with armies. We still have board games running most of the time, but most nights we'll have a game or two of Warmachine/Hordes running as well.

Another reason that I want to do this is that I love to paint and can't choose an army for myself.

I have 3 painted armies, but rarely play my Menoth. Even though I think it is possibly the best looking one.
I was going to get and paint a Khador army, but my brother decided to play that as his second faction so I gave him most of the two player box models.

I'm also this close to buying the hordes two player box because the two hordes armies I like the most are Circle and Legion. They both look like they would be alot of fun to paint. Maybe in the next few months...

The game is very easy/cheap to try.

The balance between armies is very very nice.

You can pretty much play anything you want and do fine.

Well, I am not 100% convinced on the "play anything" and "nothing is OP/UP". But if you are playing with friends and look at the obvious synergy between different units, etc then you should have reasonably fair and fun games.

One problem that might start to crop up is the game can be a bit like rock/paper/scissors at times. A unit might be really good against some things so next time you play you go with something else that is better against the same player. Sometimes this does give the impression of certain things being OP. Also some things are almost an autoinclude in alot of armies. So again, if it is that good you are very nearly the definition of OP.

As for play what you want, you want to get some synergy going. For example taking a warcaster who does alot of buffing with a unit that can't be buffed is a bad idea. Theoretically you can play it, but it probably won't do well. And some things are more niche than other.

Underpowered units don't neccesairly exist as "bad" units. But some units are labeled bad because you can generally find a similar option for less points or a better option for the same amount. Kind of the opposite of an auto-include. They are usually just fine units that do what they say they will. Just not the same "bang for your buck".

So depends on what you want. The batteboxes should be fairly fun games to sit down and play with as a friendly beer and pretzels type thing. But if you get into it more then the arms race begins. How that goes depends on your group.

It is possable to have one list be a hard counter to another list, even at the competitive level. Thats why many tournaments let you have multiple lists that you can switch out.

So make sure when you are making your sample armies you don't end up with something like that.

Yes. Its a fun game and also allows you to be mopre exciting with the scenery than with warhammer-I.E. you can have narrow rocky bridges leading out to rock messiahas in the sea and great hills and ravines.

Also the game is easy to play and you can do alot more such as throwing stuff and knocking your opponent over(or off the afore mentioned bridges and rocky messiahas so that they plunge to there deaths in the raging sea below )

So as i said go for it.
