Hello dakka.

I'm looking to paint up some lizardmen. The scheme I'm looking at is a very light belly, fleshy type color, with the top most scalesbeing black. The white fleshy tone I've got, but how do I build up the black on the scales. Normally I could just build up from grey, no problem. But the added texture of the scales have me confounded on how to put them together with the base black.

Any examples would be good, but instructions and help is always useful.

I wasn't sure if it would be something that simple. Would the drybrush dull the black down?

Probably look at drybrushing with blue or something along those lines - though...you can get better results with just painting a blue edging on the scales. It actually paints up pretty quickly.

if drybrushing dulls the black just go over it with a black wash again! that will darken the (maybe) dulled down black and tie in the highlighted edges

German gray is pretty much the next color up, it looks pretty good IMO. For scales I think I would dry brush it on and then us a light gray to add a single highlight to the scales (sorta like you would a jewel effect) to give them an illusion of shine like on scaly reptiles such as snakes have normally.

German gray is found in Vallejo model air, or model color lines.

and i would personally even go one highlight further with a very soft drybrush of a very light grey before washing it with black wash
