Subject: Kabal of the Fallen Rain - Mandrake Conversions + Venom Painted (3/30)
++++++++++
Sylthyx slouched lazily against the wall of the outpost guarding one of many dimensional gates. The sounds of a conflict echoed from an alleyway to his left, but he had given up on trying to draw a bead on any of the skirmishers. He longed for a bit of sport, but abandoning his post would mean death, if Vect were in a good mood. Gazing detachedly at a vid-feed displaying a gladiatorial Wych match, the Black Heart Warrior habitually flicked his knife through the air in various lethal maneuvers.
The screen of the vid-feed went black. Sylthyx swore loudly, straightened himself out, and peered through his gun scope at the outpost's other end where the other Warrior manning the outpost was stationed. Khedrar was examing his vid-feed monitor. The stupid bastard forgot to check on the generator this morning, decided Sylthyx with contempt. He set of across the ramparts to give Khedrar hell for his latest failure.
When a very irritated Kabalite arrived at Khedrar's section of the outpost, he was very surprised to find that Khedrar was gone; Sylthyx didn't think the lazy oaf had the intuition to actually fix the problem. As he turned to go back to his outpost, he noted his increasingly bad luck that day as rain drops began to fall on his newly polished armor. It never rains in Commoragh, but Sylthyx wasn't worried for a moment; he assumed he was the victim of some fool's prank against the solar cults. He began turning his head upwards to see if rain clouds were indeed blocking out the stolen suns, however he never got the chance to finish. Taloned claws grasped his shoulders and yanked him upwards into the falling red rain. ++++++++++
Hey guys! This is my blog for my (hopefully) ongoing project of the Kabal of the Fallen Rain. Expect model pictures, army lists, battle reports, etc. Since you all like pictures, here you go!
Edit: Actually, scroll down for better pictures. Those old ones are embarassing

I'm back with an update and better pictures! After getting sidetracked by some other projects, I'm back to the Kabal, and it'll be in full swing again once said side projects are sold on ebay But for now, enjoy some (hopefully) better pictures of some new or updated models as well as a shot of all the models painted so far!
Most of what I changed on the models was the skin color and the color of the flayed skin tabards and such. I think it looks a lot nicer now.
So after trying to take pictures at dark this afternoon, I quickly realized that natural light was how I was getting better pictures before. So when I tried at first, the lack of natural light made the pictures a lot worse. The solution?
Ta da! My own little lighting setup. Not sure how good it is, but it worked! So now, here's the pictures of the models:
Another Wych - experimented with some blood effects on this one.
The WIP Archon. I think she's turning out quite nicely so far, still some work to do though.
I've recently developed a thing about having no more than two projects going at the same time. So alongside my Dark Eldar, I'll be doing either Warriors of Chaos:
or Chaos Space Marines!
Part of me wants to start WFB, and part of me thinks I'll have more fun coming up with my own warband for CSM. I'll probably go with whatever I come up with a cool theme for first

I like your paint scheme, particularly the dirty white. It looks nice and serviceable. The bright blue hilighting is looking good, too.
Thanks! Glad you like the white, took a while to figure out how I wanted it.
Didn't have any updates for a while since I was adding a few new Space Wolves to my army for a GT, but here's a quick update:
Some more progress on the Archon, I like the way she's turning out but there's some things I missed that I notice now that I look at the picture.
And a shot of what's to come:
What I plan to do here is make 5 warriors or trueborn, then use the left over models and maybe 2 of the venom crew to make some Fallen Rain "Lightning Hunters" - aka mandrakes. I have a plan for them and I think it'll turn out well.
Thanks for looking!

She's looking awesome. I really like the white symbols on her dress, they stand out well and are very neatly done.
The only concrit I have is that the blade in her right hand looks a bit flat compared the the one on her left (although feel free to correct me if it's just the photo looking like that).
I really like the green blade, I've done metal blades with a green wash over them, but now I'm thinking full on green blades might be better.
Your archon is looking very good and the dirty white on your other models looks good too.
Looking forward to more updates.

Thank you! About the blade in her right hand, it's not actually a blade - if you look closely, it's just the sheath. But you're right, when I looked at the model it's the only thing that really stands out as being flat. I'll probably go back and either paint it a different color or add some highlights to it.

Thanks! I just recently started doing swords in non-metallic colors, and I'm really liking the way they look.
The snow here has already hit a few inches and is still coming down, so more updates later today!
Update time again! Here's the first 2 out of my 5 planned Mandrake conversions. Sorry for the low-quality pictures, but I figured it wasn't worth setting up any kind of lighting for two unpainted models. Oh and just note that the base on one of them is not finished.
Massive update! Well, actually, it's not very massive, I just finished the Mandrake conversions. But I took lots of pretty pictures And, even though I really didn't want to, I threw together a lighting setup to make all one or two of my loyal fans happy Anyway, here they are:
The full squad! Now for some individual shots:
(She got two shots just cause I like her.)
And now, for a shot of what's painted and what is on the to do list:
(I shouldn't have let Dakka auto-adjust this one, all the detail got obscured cause of how bright parts of my army are)
The to do list. Might get all this stuff painted by the end of the month. Maybe.
Thanks for checking it out! And just because I like posting these kinds of things, here's what I listened to while working on some of this stuff:

I took a bit of a break for a while due to offputting GW policy changes and prices, and due to not wanting to do more line highlighting, but I'm back now! You may notice that I've changed up my scheme a bit - the armor is now getting a blue wash, and my more recent models are drybrushed and not line highlighted. It doesn't look as nice, but it's much, much less stressful. Anyway, onto the pictures! Oh, and by the way, if anyone has any suggestions for alternate game systems to get into (I'm already liking the look of Infinity), please let me know, as I'm looking to switch. I may go to either MTG or chess, in which case I would continue painting 40k, just not playing.
Venom:
Two finished mandrakes:
WIP Mandrakes (these ones are drybrushed):
Shot of everything that's been painted so far:
Thanks for reading and happy Easter!

I feel that. I love the 40K IP, but Games Workshop... I don't think I'll give it up, but I have started looking elsewhere and shopping at my independent FLGS as opposed to the GW shop.
I've recently gotten into Warmachine, starting out with a Cryx faction. It's been a lot of fun to paint, more fun than I thought it would be. It's also a lot more affordable than GW. I can't comment on how the game is played (I don't know how to play 40K or Warmachine). If you're interested in the models, though, I've started a Cryx p&m thread - http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/516927.page
