Just got a new computer with x4 USB 3.0 ports and run a USB 1.0 printer, that can be detected but not recognized as a printer.
Any way to make them work or will I need to go and buy a new printer?
I was going to do so anyway but in 3-4 months time.

It should work fine, sure it's not the drivers? If it's old enough to use USB 1.0 it may not be UPnP.

I don't believe that USB 3 is backwards compatible with 1, I think it's just 2.

Mandorallen turned back toward the insolently sneering baron. 'My Lord,' The great knight said distantly, 'I find thy face apelike and thy form misshapen. Thy beard, moreover, is an offence against decency, resembling more closely the scabrous fur which doth decorate the hinder portion of a mongrel dog than a proper adornment for a human face. Is it possibly that thy mother, seized by some wild lechery, did dally at some time past with a randy goat?' - Mimbrate Knight Protector Mandorallen.

USB is universally backwards compatible. It will drop down to, I believe, 12mbps as a max transfer; which is adequate for printing. You have some other problem; probably some driver issue.
What model printer, and what OS? x86 or x64?

USB 3.0 is beautiful. I might be wrong, but I think you can actually use them to connect with monitors, and other high quality devices, since they have more pins, and a 5Gbps connection (which is almost as fast as a hard drive). USB 2.0 has a 480 Mbps connection, which is still fairly fast, but not adequate for things like hard drives, phones and certain cameras.
Since they haven't removed any pins, legacy devices should still work, even back to USB 1.0. The problem is probably stemming from something else.
Has USB 3.0 invalidated PS/2 inputs?
