I know it's not strickly GW paints but I base-coated / primed with Halfords grey primer:

I need to update this pic with one that shows the shading layer.

may want to take a look at "The Fang", it's a GW Dark grey, I used to mix Shadow Grey and Space Wolf Grey together to get a good coat on mine. Pre Heresy "Wolves of Fenris" were actually supposed to be a really dark gray, I believe I used "Eshin Grey" for some really dark grey on a few Infinity minis that I painted and highlighted them with Codex Grey (that's the old name) but I believe you could easily highlight Eshin with Dawnstone or Administratum grey.

"You are like a son and together we have all but conquered the galaxy. Now the time has come for me to retire to Terra. My work as a soldier is done and now passes to you for I have great tasks to perform in my earthly sanctum. I name you Warmaster and from this day forth all of my armies and generals shall take orders from you as if the words came from mine own mouth. But words of caution I have for you for your brother Primarchs are strong of will, of thought and of action.

Basecoat with "The Fang", shade with "Nuln Oil" and layer with "Russ Grey" and then "Fenrisian Grey". I used these paints for some navy camouflage and I'd say they're perfect for Space Wolves. That's what they're made for after all.

Since you, like myself, are having troubling picking paints these guides can be pretty helpful.

I know most of these aren't GW either, but I fell in love with these colors for my pack. Gw colors have their new counterpart names in parenthesis.

Primed Krylon grey, basecoat Reaper Master Series "Midnight Blue," bring up to Reaper Master Series "Twilight Blue," highlight with Reaper Master Series "Snow Shadow" or "Fortress Grey," (Administratum Grey) depending on your preference.

Wash it all down with Badab Black ( "Nuln Oil" or whatever equivalent you've got your hands on) . My metals are done with "Dwarven Bronze" (Hashut Copper) washed with "Gryphonne Sepia." (Seraphim Sepia)

Check out my gallery for the results of that combination, if you so choose. Good luck in your decision.

Why is it that only those who have never fought in a battle are so eager to be in one?
