Well, as the tittle suggests i am about to start a new army which i have narrowed down to either Beastmen or Ogres (with the help of the army Tactica which was pretty darn usefull ).
So the reason im starting a new army is that i,ve just been convinced to sell my prized LM, and the hole in my cupboard is making me cry.....So a new army it is! The only other armies i've played are, as stated LM and my favourites Brettonians. As such my shooting experience is one of "hit or miss" and i enjoy bossing the magic phase. I see combat as "winnable" depending on how you organized it.
Painting is not an issue.

So on the two options, i understand that Beastmen are an older armybook so the questions i feel i should ask as i wont find out untill i start playing;
Are their any horrendous holes which means il have to play a certain style to be competitive?
Ease of writing lists?

On the Ogre side of the coin i've always been a massive fan of monsrous infantry, and the low model count would make painting easier, as well as having decent ability in all the phases. Are my assumptions True?

May your chest inspire the hopes and dreams of millions.
May your arm girth frighten the elderly, slow moving adults and very small children.
May your gains be plentiful.
Go forth and LIFT.

Well Beastmen have a older book, but there are several ways to tackle your foe with them. They do have a somewhat steep learning curve but they can and will demolish just about anything if you play smart. The holes are of no big concern since they are far from game breaking. it just makes your task as a general somewhat more difficult. The list part is fine, no stress with it

And Ogres are an all round elite army who eats and smash things in equal amounts. And they do play very well, noting is as amusing to field a vast army of sweaty Ogres

It's hard to find an army that dominates in it's magic phase as much as Beastmen do. Shard of the Herdstone and cheap level 1s guarantee 3-4 power dice before channeling, jagged daggers allows you to get more than 12 power dice per turn as you turn in models that have been killed by it's bearers when you need the power dice. Then you have all those level 1s throwing out miasmas to make your troops hit harder. So lets compare them.

Beastmen
-Primal Fury, LD based hatred rolled every round of combat, failed less then 5% of the time with Ld10 and BSB rerolls
-Bestigor and Gor are WS4
-Bestigor hit just as hard as Iron Guts at S6, no stomp or fear though.
-Lore of the Wild sucks but death, beasts and shadow all work well with Beastmen
-Doombulls, enough said
-Chaff Chaff and more Chaff, 30pt ungor raiders, harpies, razorgor are incredibly good
-Pretty much no shooting, sorry ungors BS3, S3 just doesn't cut it when you are firing off 5 shots
-S3 gor suck but can be fixed with magic augments and beast banner

Ogres
-Stomp and Ogre Chage
-Mourfang crazy good, good armor should crush most units
-Leadbelchers are better
-Ironblasters are crazy good
-WS3 will make you pull your hair out as well as I2

Ogres were my first army, I love them fattys but this was prior to the new book and the WS3 made me sad, so I started Beastmen and the jump to WS4 with rerolls was really nice. The more I bought and the more I looked into and played beastmen really became more awesome to me. I also like they were the last army of 7th built with 8th in mind (see LD based Primal Fury and BSB rerolls) and they aren't stuck with the mandatory 10pt unit command that all armies in 8th have. As for rolls I have seen beastmen competitive in mainly 2 builds herdstone spam and minobus but there are other tactics, if you are familiar with Brettonians you may have seen Oncebitten360's videos on you tube and he plays Beastmen as well with a cool scheme where he uses minotaur to deliver a doombull that just wrecks everything, his most recent video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wBjqnJYUjAs skip to about 15:20) watch a doombull take on a gutstar that gets the charge off on him, albeit he had some really good rolling.

It covers the surface of society with a network of small complicated rules, minute and uniform, through which the most original minds and the most energetic characters cannot penetrate, to rise above the crowd. The will of man is not shattered, but softened, bent, and guided; men are seldom forced by it to act, but they are constantly restrained from acting. Such a power does not destroy, but it prevents existence; it does not tyrannize, but it compresses, enervates, extinguishes, and stupefies a people, till each nation is reduced to nothing better than a flock of timid and industrious animals, of which the government is the shepherd

Thank you, I too like the sound of primal fury and Minobus's and will therefore probably buy the armybook and battalion for Beastmen at the weekend.

2 Battalions and a box of bestigor are a great start that there will form the backbone of a Beastmen army through 2k, horde of 40 gors, block of 30 bestigor and 4 units of raiders get em while they are still under $100 they were overlooked at the price increases last year doubt they will be this year.
