for some time I have been under the impression that because Allies of Convenience(AoC) were counted as enemy units, they would actually contest your objectives if near them, and be unable to secure objectives for you, but today while informing someone else about the ally rules I noticed something.

The rules for AoC only state "units in your army treat allies of convenience as enemy units" which suggests to me they are only enemies for the purposes of units undertaking actions, whereas the larger meta game still considers them your own friendly units.

Further they don't specify anything about scoring and denial whereas, Desperate Allies go on to very clearly state the units are not only non-scoring, but non-denial units.

So have I been misunderstanding this, can Allies of Convenience safely help you secure objectives?

Interceptor Drones can disembark at any point during the Sun Shark's move (even though models cannot normally disembark from Zooming Flyers).

It's been my understanding that they can indeed secure objectives for you. I take this from the explanation of Desperate Allies which says that they are treated exactly like AoC except that they cannot hold objectives and you have to do that whole distrust test thing. That sentence implies to me that AoC do have that ability if they felt the need to point out that Desperate Allies lack that.

I think considering allies of convenience enemy models was pure laziness on gws part. It made it so they didn't have to explicitly state some stuff. In this case, however, who can hold objectives just lists troop selections from your force organization chart. It does not specify "friendly" in any way. So your troops have blanket permission to be scoring/denial and desperate allies is the only allowed ally level that explicitly removes that permission.

Yes, you have been misunderstanding this. Allies are considered to be friendly units as far as your armylist is concerned. It is only when interacting with other units on the board that they are considered enemies, as described on page 112.

AoC troops are scoring units to your army.
