Thank you guys for all of your help.
I decided to do one of my flyer bases. Have yet to build either storm talon, but since I have the new changes advised to me and in mind, I decided to do the base first.
The concept was the same, but a few changes were implemented:
1) Before the static grass was added, I went through and put about 3 coats of liquitex varnish on to give a moister look. It worked, but a high gloss would probably be better. The effect that it gave was like Washington's general moist environment, rather than a meadow just after a light rain.
2) I also added in a bit more war-torn environment that has grown over. I added in two small skulls and an Eldar head with an old dried up head wound.
The other challenge was that I did not want to permanently attach the clear flyer stand. I wanted to keep it with the ability to remove due to having less and less room in my case. (Can always use suggestions for a vehicle case that does not make me broke nor involves a cardboard box )
So here is the in progress pictures to the new flyer base. 2 hours and Groundhog Day on the computer to start and finish it.
As always, let me know if you have any questions and am always looking for suggestions on how to make it better.
Thank you again everyone,
Travis 'Waffles' Walthall
Again, let me know if you have any other suggestions, want to know any steps I took, or want any other pictures.
Thanks everyone,
Waffles

I suggest putting some clump foliage around the bottom of the stem. There's a very visible 'cross' where it's meeting the base at the moment.

I hate the transparent plastic cross.
Otherwise I really like that base. It looks really good to me.
A board game like that would be GREAT ! Do you plan on making one ?

Will see what I can do to try and hide the cross a bit. I will post up more pictures in about 10 hours.

While I think your bases look amazing, they seem a bit too picturesque for the 40k setting. These look like they would be more at home in a WH:FB High Elf or Wood Elf army but that's just my opinion.
Either way, they are a lot better than my bases. If you haven't posted one already, an in-depth tutorial would be great.

I can do that. I still got another flyer base and roughly 50 25mm bases still to do. Would you like more of how to do the 25/40mm bases or the 60mm/flyer bases?
And yes, I understand the fantasy idea base concept. When I did my original 25/40mm base set to try out the idea, I posted up if it seemed like it would not work for 40k. Since then I started to burn patches of the static grass, add the torn up rusting metal and occasional skull/helmet. General concensous that the changves helped out a lot, but since this is only my third interation of this base, it is still becoming a "darker" side of peaceful medows of doom.

I'm mainly interested in what types of materials you use and your method for painting the stone. I'm still deciding on how I want to base my Orks and I was going to be buying some modeling stuff from my FLGS soon. Do you use Gale Force 9 or is there a better alternative?
From the look of your bases you could do a number of tutorials on different styles if you wanted to. They look very professional.

Yea, they look that way due to many years of modeling with my dad on train set ups and helping out a few friends in a Boeing model train club with their terrain. I can do one on how to make these specifically or are you more looking for a small chain of stuff like: how to use cork for terrain, how to paint terrain, how to battle damage flock, etc.?
I can do either relatively easily and share a few secrets I use to get some of the effects in the terrain. Other terrain builders may not like it, but those are mostly old train modelers that horde their techniques like it was winning lottery numbers.
As far as flock, this was GF9, but I have never seen "bad" flock. Just go with what has the best color for what you are trying to achieve.

Yea, my original thoughts were the same, but I am going for subtlety and for something you don't see much, or even at all, with 40k models. Any sugestions on how to make it more war-torn with out geting rid of the false calmness to the basses?

Whatever you feel like doing man, it's up to you. I just think it would be cool to have tutorials with examples for different themes like Desert, Jungle, Badlands, Swamp, Urban, etc. for us beginners who are just starting to get into detailed basing. That would probably be a lot of work though.
Whatever secrets you could share with the unwashed masses would be great

Well I can show how to use cork and with that you can do about 8 different enviroments depending on how you set up the cork, paint, and accessorize (flocking, brush, etc.)
