Without full knowledge of what 6th ed has done to any of the races i've decided to pick up a new army to celebrate the beginning of my 6th edition career. All i've bothered to look up are the 6th ed main rule changes and the Eldar FAQ thus far and i've decided seeing as the Eldar are now even harder to play than they were before, I want to play them xD. I realise that the Eldar have had rough times with their now severely outdated book and the release of a new edition so this is what i've come up with as a base army to work off of using what little strengths the Eldar have left, in my opinion at least.

1000 pts Eldar

Eldrad Ulthran

5 Fire Dragons
* Falcon

15 Guardians
- EML
Warlock
* Embolden

5 Rangers

5 Rangers

2 War Walkers
- 2 SLs

Fire Prism

My math isn't the greatest but that should equal 1,000 pts on the dot.

Key notes on my thoughts behind this list: The Eldar vehicle upgrades have become all but useless on nearly all of the vehicles so i've decided not to put any on the few vehicles I have. The 'Avengers in a serpent until it blows' is no longer viable as troops can't score from inside a vehicle, thus the lack of Avengers since not only do their guns pale in comparison to Rapid Fire weapons now, but they also lost their best tactic from the previous edition. The way I see it a larger squad of Guardians hunkered down on a ruin objective with Embolden will at least hold an objective a lot better than the Avengers can. Rangers and Pathfinders are the only troops that got a boost at all and so I picked up two squads to make the most of them that I could; hopefully 6's will take out some sergeants early on, I'm aiming to get to scream "BOOM! HEADSHOT!" in at least one of my games. Fire Dragons are as good as they were and ever will be so I put the mandatory squad in there, figured a falcon would be more suitable a transport so it can at least chip in a few shots before it blows up. Fire prism and War walkers form my static line with the guardian squad and pump shots into whatever target is best at any given point. Finally, Eldrad, who needs no explanation in larger point games, but might do in a game with a point limitation such as this one. Personally, I think we still shine as Psykers, and Eldrad is undoubtedly the best we've got, but also I feel that the ability to guide both the War Walkers and the Fire prism whilst fortune'ing the guardians all in one turn will win me more games than a standard Seer and perhaps another walker will. Flipping a Russ so that it's rear faces my medium-power fire, roasting a commander and dooming a blob squad before a pie plate smacks them is also just too much for me to resist. Still, if someone were to provide a valid arguement as to why he isn't as good as "x" and "x" because of "x" i'd be more than happy to switch him out, same applies for anything else in the list. Thanks in advance!

It looks like a cool list, but does look a little light on numbers. You've got a total of 34 models for 1000pts, as an example I can fit 50 odd models in 500pts of Orks, so you may have trouble with horde armies like mine or 'Nids or Guard too.
Yes, you can put out a lot of firepower, but you do have to hit on BS3 standard.

Eldrad is awesome but super expensive and can't be in two places at once, why not try two Farseers instead for the points? Then you have more utility to spread around and more anti-psyker.

I agree with the Guardian blob for objective holdin, but what about objective grabbing? They work to hold your own lines/keep your "home" objectives safe, but who's going to get the one in the middle of the table or the enemy's deployment zone? Definitely not the Rangers who don't necessarily have the numbers to hold your own objectives if they start getting shot up.

Fire Dragons in the Falcon are great, but I see them as a little "one trick"ish. They zoom up, they drop out within 12", they shoot and hopefully get a kill against something big. Problem comes after. They get shot and/or assaulted to death (losing 130 or so points) and then a decent chance that Falcon is still within 12" or so from the enemy and very vulnerable. At that point you're losing closer to 250pts or so, which is a quarter of your army.

I like the Prism and the SL War Walkers, lots of death from afar and can deal with most things through weight of fire.

Ok, ill be the first to admit I'm NOT an Eldar expert, but have played them a few times over the years/editions. I might recommend some alternate anti-tank instead of sinking so many points into the Dragons/Falcon combo to make room for some Storm Guardians or Avengers for grabbing objectives, or even more Guardians with Conceal to help them get ANY kind of save.

Eldrad is a lot of eggs in one basket that can't be everywhere at once (as I said) so maybe two Farseers?

Rangers, Prism and War Walkers are cool in my eyes, so not much to say there.

Anyone feel free to tell me I'm way off, but these are just some random thoughts I was pondering.

Hope this helps!

A good point with eldrad, I recommend a farseer or two instead. I also recommend picking up IAII and replacing the prism with a warp hunter.

I think the 2 farseer idea is a great way to spread out your guide and embolden powers. I would also drop the prism to add some more guardians. More numbers means more survivability, and more shots. The crap saves of the eldar can also be made up by an ageis line.

Why not take a serpent for the dragons instead of a falcon. The falcon costs 20 points more base, lacks the TL top gun and the energy field of the serpent. Falcons are decent with a guideseer inside to twin link the shooting+EML for S8 fire, but not a great suicide squad(in particular now that holo fields got a nerf).

A serpent with TL s. cannons and a chin cannon will run you ten points less, and perform similar, if not better.

I agree with dropping eldrad. Two guides is nice, but you don't have a unit that really needs fortune, and doom only works in close range and can be stopped with deny the witch. Most of your shooting is on BS3 platforms, but is S6+, meaning hits, not wounds are hard to generate. The only real thing that needs guide is the walkers. Prisms are fine without it, but scatter lasers need the mass of shots. A falcon could also benefit from guide if you had it tooled out as a gunboat. If you wanted two guide seers(swap guide for prescience, 1 w/runes warding) it would be cheaper than eldrad. I would just take a single seer with guide+runes, maybe spirit stones and doom.

Try to get a third scatter walker. As was said above, a single warp hunter>single prism. Unless you want to drop the falcon to get a second prism, which is also valid.

Fortuned guardians will evaporate, even in cover. Drop them down to ten. The squad is there for the heavy weapon, and the warlock to re roll morale and Psychic tests(put a farseer here).

Thanks for the responses.

I figured Eldrad might get the boot. Shame, but ill swap him out if the other suggested replacements work better. Another valid point on the Falcon so I'll swap that out for a Wave Serpent. With those freed points I should be able to get another War Walker and a single RoW/Guide Farseer. It's funny that someone mentioned that I'd only be taking the Guardians for the platform because that wasn't my intention. I figured I'd be going to ground every turn so long as I was getting shot at and make use of the platform whenever I could. That makes me wonder if I should replace them with another squad of rangers which should give me enough spare points to slot in another prism. Then I began to wonder if infact some Warp Spiders would be any good to replace the second prism, and so now I'm stuck again. Thanks for the quick replys though.

I'll post a revised list when I get back from work. I'm hoping to get some feedback on that one too before I commit to buying the models. In the meanwhile what do you guys think about the more rangers/warpsider/prism issue? Thanks again!

Rangers are decent at not dying, holding an objective and killing an MC. That is about it.

Warp spiders are amazing, but really only come into their own at 1250 points or more.

If you plan on going to ground with the guardians, then get a shuriken cannon for cheap, or a scatter laser if you plan on doing any real damage. The EML single shot is disappointing at bs3, but needing 6's to hit and no option for the blast is even worse.

With what people have said i've put together another list with only one final issue, which is the Warp Spiders or another Prism. The way I see it, I feel the prism should win out but seeing as I haven't yet tried Spiders I want to see what people think before I buy the models.

Farseer - 93 pts
- SS, RoW, Guide

5(6) Fire Dragons - 170 pts
* Wave Serpent

10 Guardians - 95 pts
- SL
Warlock - 30 pts
* Embolden

5 Rangers - 95 pts

5 Rangers - 95 pts

3 War Walkers - 180 pts
- 2 SLs

Fire Prism - 115 pts

127 pts left

Fire Prism - 115 pts (or) 5 Warp Spiders
+ Extra Firedragon * Exarch w/ Dual Spinners

This'll likely be the last time I post on this thread before I make my decision on models. Thanks in advance.

Second fire prism if thats really the only 2 choices your giving. Warp spiders with their super short range are pretty mediocre.

I think you you should consider some dire avengers in a serpent. A nice amnount of shooty, scoring, and the 4+ save helps a little. Good unit for your farseer to ride with.
