Well I understand chaos space marines and the gifts/blessings given to them by their worshipped chaos gods and also find ascension into being a daemon prince as a rather awesome goal. My only problem is understanding the relationship between chaos and it's cultists. The normal people who worship the chaos gods. I know they are nothing more than meat shields and fodder to fill in the gaps but there must be the promise of something other than random mutated appendages. What is the height of what they can hope to achieve being a cultist and worshipping whatever god they worship? I imagine becoming a deamon prince or any kind of demon hood most likely is beyond their grasp but what are the benefits then?

Hope this question is understandable. I'm hoping in some book or fluff there is an answer lurking.

I think the basics are Khrone makes you stronger and more skillful with martial abilities, Nurgle rescues you from the dispair of diseases or starvation and I think keeps you alive indefinately, Tzneetch tends to elavate his followers higher in society and Slanesh has that whole pleasure cult, sensory enhancement, elavates your skills to perfection in whatever art your focused, things of that nature. There are short term gains long before potential deamonhood.

Scar this symbol onto your chest and you will be stronger than any man in the colony, praise me and you will no longer suffer the pain of exotic disease rotting your insides kind of thing. Escalating to sacrafice new born babes and I might remember you exist.

Some cultists are not looking for a reward or, if you insist on talking about rewards, worship of the Ruinous Powers is its own reward.

If you're curious, look for the Black Crusade book (the FFG RPG one). It goes into great detail on how simple human cultists can be rewarded by Chaos. In short, they have all the chance in the world to become a Daemon Prince. It's just a matter of not dying. Chaos Space Marines are just more durable, and thus more likely to make it. It's all about results for the Gods. If you do well, you'll be rewarded.
