Warmachine is easyer to play and i would say better for noobs.

If you want an army and a competative list well...... For a start we will need to know what kind of a player you are..... Gunline? Fast? slow but tough?

Really, any of the armies will do well, thought if you want good shooting, I'd say go Cygnar, Menoth, Retribution or Legion. Cygnar definitely is the most shooty faction, having many options for ranged infantry and jacks, though you'll find that a pure gunline doesn't work all that well most of the time in this game. Menoth doesn't have the best shooting infantry, it's mostly for skirmishing or random aoes, but it's shooting Jacks under the power of all it's jack buffs are absolutely brutal. Retribution (the 'Angry Elves') also do combined arms really well, and have one of the best shooting units in the game (Mage Hunter Strike Force).

Legion are fast, fragile, ignore most of the rules and have some lists that are very good at shooting. If you were thinking to go hordes, it might be the list for you.

But first, which armies do you like the theme/look of? As I said, most armies can do well enough with shooting, depending on which sort of list you want to take, so let us know what interests you, and we'll break it down for you.

Finally, a competitive list is completely dependent on how it's put together - there are no pure win buttons, and having a good unit in a list that doesn't help them often is worse than a medicre unit in a list that supports/uses them well. Each caster has his or her own likes and dislikes, but we can certainly point you towards some good starting units for whatever army you decide on.

I would say Cryx. They are similar(very fast some units running at 14")

The basic starter set:

Warwitch Deneghra-an amazing caster with a ridicoulous speed of 7 and a gak-a-brick load of debuffs. also should she strike a model in melee it cant move next turn. She has a nice focus of 7 and cull soul. An amazingly good close support caster.

2x Deathrippers-not much to say here. VERY fast arcnodes on legs. Unlike other factions arcnode jacks the arcnodes on these are actually there primary arment. The jaws are just for close defence but do have sustained attack. a Speed of 7 as well

Defiler-Everything i said for a Deathripper counts here but this little sprinter has an acid spraying weapon in place of the Deathrippers mandibles. Very useful and quite nasty.

Slayer-An extremely underpriced heavy that has 3(yes 3) attacks base, 2 at P+S16 and 1 at P+S12 oh and it has 2 open fists. Charge it in, smack the enemy in the face, and then pick up their mangled remains and chuck them at something(I.E. their caster) and watch them go squish. Armour isnt the best but defence and speed are high for a heavy. You want to be doing the charging with this.

From there i would advise:

Pistol Wraith-atleast one but preferably 2. Speed of 6, a low mat-but you will never need it, a very good rat and 2 wraithlock pistols. Each one is range 12 pow 10 and in addidition should both hit then you get an extra shot for free that does no damage but effectivly neuters the target for a turn(the target has to choose between moving or making an action). It also has cull soul.

Bloat Thrall-with the Slayer these have a myriad of uses. You can just stick with it waddling forwards as a support unit-yes its speed and mat are crap but a 12" range and pow 14 5" blast?...... even if it misses its still likely to catch the target on the blast and should you drop it in on units of infantry?..... Of course thats just basic. But with your Slayers 2 open hands it can pick up you Bloat Thrall and throw it at the enemy where upon impact it will most likely explode like a giant bomb! Of course it may not but of course then the enemy is locked in combat and cant risk moving away without suffering a boosted P+S10 hit! And even if you end up not in combat you can still shoot with it!

Necro Tech-A must have. With the capability to repair damaged Jacks and the the ability to create Scrap Thralls out of wreck markers this is an extremely potent unit. The Scrap Thralls can also blow themselves up in the enemys face-very fun!

Bile Thralls-Probaly not a beginners unit but very very good. At a first glace they are not very good-Poor mat, rat, speed and defence. The only thing going for them is the spray template they produce. But then look at their ability-Any model in the unit can sacrifice itself to automaticaly hit everything within 6" of its frontal arc with a pow 12 hit. The only way they cant be hit is if they are in total cover(I.E. behind a tall wall, in a building with no windows, etc). If used correctly this can wipe out a whole army.

Machine Wraith-Useful for disrupting the enemys plans. If it gets within range of an enemy Jack then it can machine meld with it to essentially hack into it and take it over. The only way to shift it is for the controlling caster to spend focus(and unless their high command this is unlikely to work) or to deal damage to their own Jack. If you like the though of going on the rampage with your opponents stuff then this is the Wraith for you!
