I don't know- I just feel like my love of the hobby has petered out due to the fact I can barely afford anything... my armies are gathering dust in the bottom of my closet, I haven't played a game for months.
Is it just me? or does anyone else feel this way?

I sort of know how you feel
It's what ended my Tau army...
Now though I'm going to plan how I spend my money.
The thing is, it's such a good hobby and it's really enjoyable just painting the little figures and making up stories for them and that's coming from someone who has never truly had a battle in about 4 years of having a titchy army, it's just because it's so expensive unless you have the money to spend it will take a while to eventually build up to the larger sizes.

It's what made me good with greenstuff. I couldn't afford the actual models, so I converted my own, which eventually went all the way up to scratchbuilding my own.
Perhaps part of the problem that you're having is that you have armies - plural. It's going to be pretty expensive to keep everything updated if you're dragging a wide net. If not being able to update things causes you to lose interest, perhaps you might want to consider pruning back down to a single army. The proceeds from the sale could help you get more stuff.

Fixed that for you, it isn't the hobby you you have fallen out of love with its 40k.
What do you need so desperately to add to your armies that scratch building, converting, swapping or proxying can't solve?

Stick to one army, and only get another if you get into another system.
That's how I've kept it affordable. Started with Tyranids. Got into Fantasy, aot Vampire Counts. Got into Infinity, got Haqqislam. My friend is looking at Dropzone Commander - if he pulls the trigger, Posthuman Republic. One system, one army.
The best thing about it is it keeps your options open. Burned out on 40k? Play Infinity until the itch comes back.

This.
I almost never buy any new model, all I do is paint the tons of models I have gathered in the past years. You don't need the brand new minis to play. A space marine is stil a space marine. An ork is still an ork. Even if they're from RT era.
The price is an obstacle for the beginners. If you already have armies, you're not a beginner, so you already have all you need to play, paint and have fun.

I played for many years with models going back to RT and 2nd edition (and this was 5th edition). Not buying much in the way of new stuff didn't hamper much of anything.
My 40k armies are currently languishing on a shelf in the cupboard since I tired of the game (and the interminable RAW/RAI/common sense arguments that ALWAYS surfaced).

I go through hot and cold phases myself. Sometimes I don't touch anything 40k or GW related for months, then I pick up the bug again. Either I wonder into a FLGS or I go to visit my brother who always has the new, shiny stuff.
Either that or I play a drunken game of Warhammer Quest or Blood Bowl and that gets the creative juices flowing again! As others have said, pick up something else. Don't limit yourself to TT either, find a local gaming group the does RPG's or CCG's like Shadowrun or M:TG...

Pretty dull with "THE GW HOBBY" now, but as far as 40K is concerned, I've been GM'ing scenario games and harking back to the RT/2nd edition feel as much as possible.
As dry as I find GW stuff, Infinity, Malifaux and countless others are really firing me up. Infinity especially - love that!

There are plenty of games other than 40k, almost all of which are cheaper, and many of which are better. If 40k isn't getting your rocks off anymore, it would be worth your time to check a few of them out.

My hobby budget is quite tight. I still play with the old stuff (dating back to RT) and it still works fine. I slowly add new stuff as I'm able. I will admit to playing less 6th edition over the summer, due to the lack of flyers and AA units. Not a total lack of interest, but the motivation to drag myself up to my FLGS was noticeably diminished. With my annual influx of cash from my birthday in early november, I picked up a stormtalon and aegis, so am rearing to go. Of course, my life took advantage of that time to explode, so I haven't got a game in since, and with the holidays, it might be a bit before I do.
Interest comes and goes. I sat out most of 2nd and 4th edition. But never sold my armies, so getting back in was as easy as picking up the new rules and a new unit or two.

My interest waxes and wanes.
I have models from RT right through to yesterday (literally) but only really get new models as tournament entries or on holidays/birthdays.
I'm currently painting an ancient ork biker unit that i never got around to painting,
When my playing urges fade, or i can't get a game for whatever reason, i paint. When painting galls me and i've lost the 40K bug for a bit, i play other games.
I have Dreadfleet, and enjoy it (boo if you want.. i like it )
I play WM on occasion.
I've been known to dust off my Necromunda once in a while (that was an AWESOME game! )
If 40K isn't your thing, and nothing makes it come back, there's a metric gakton of other games, and your 40k minis should be usable in many of them if you just want to try them out.

I go through phases where my mini gaming interests are high and other phases when they are low. It happens and you can't always expect to be 100% gung ho on a particular hobby. Sometimes you want to do something else with your time. It can definitely suck when you can buy the cool need toys, but ultimately inability to purchase new stuff doesn't make the minis you already own useless. It is possible that the costs may just be an excuse, though.
There a couple things you can do to jump start your interest again:
1) Sell off one of your armies to generate funds to buy the cool new stuff for the army or armies you decide to keep. If you have 3 armies it would be easier to sell off one of them and keep 2 and update/upgrade them.
2) Try out some other games out there. Go to your local FLGS, not a GW store, and try out other mini games with new folks as available. Local to me Warhmachine, Flames of War and Malifaux are very popular games in my FLGS. People play GW games so rarely that the store doesn't even stock 40k or Fantasy products anymore. Most established groups will be able and willing to show you the game and let you use some of their minis for the game to try it out. There are also free rulesets out there that you can download and use your current GW minis with if it is the 40k system that is bugging you at some level. Many games like that have had plenty of 40k fans pick them up and create force lists that cover the gamut of GW army options.
3) Just dig our your existing figs and make yourself play. If you haven't played in a bit, just getting the figs on the table could make a big difference in your motivation. As human beings we often wait for the motivation before we do things, but in our brains that isn't how it works. Action begets motivation, so digging out the figs and playing a game or two will more than likely give you the motivation to keep getting out to play regularly again.
If you do find that it is GW and 40k that has just rubbed thin for you and you want to move on, most other mini games on the market today have much cheaper start up costs than 40k does. The cash you get for selling a single 1500 point GW army would get the Rulebook, force list book and an entire army for Flames of War or Warmachine, depending on what you decided to play/collect. Flames of war has the added bonus that since it is World War II you can use *any* manufacturers' 15mm WW2 minis for it and don't need to buy only from battlefront, as long as you use the correct battlefront bases (or battlefront sized bases). Of course it all really depends on what the real root problem is for you.

Yup, I generally would avoid the keep buying new figs mindset, particularly for 40k. Instead, let it cool of for a couple of months, and then one day you'll go, OH SNAP, I want me some bolterporn action. That's how it works for me.
In addition, use the magic Bay of E! I consistently find that my best models are not the new awesome ones I get in boxes, but the older and often incomplete used models I get for a pittance online. It forces you to convert to make them look good, which in turns makes you put the effort in to make them unique. Green stuff is good. Granted, I DO have the advantage of collecting Chaos and Orks, both of which encourage converting. But still, I've barely ever payed for a new GW model.
I would definitely not sell your old model in a fit of boredom. Tabletop gaming is still a fairly cheap hobby, simply because it does not really lose it's value. A year down the line, those models still work fine. You could just take a look at a cheap alternative game to tide you over, perhaps a skirmish game?
Warmachine is good, though still kinda expensive for it's type, and a bit too close to 40k gameplay wise to recommend. Malifaux is brilliant, and much cheaper. Infinity is interesting, and arguably the most fun(if not most well designed), and also dirt cheap.
Or, go for a full change of pace, try Dystopian Wars or Battlefleet Gothic. Cheap as well, especially BFG. Completely different feel.

I feel the price hikes.
I've actually been gearing up to play older versions of the game. My buddy can't afford to buy the current rules, due to kids and life, but has tons of stuff from when he was big into the game during 4th edition.
And i have always been a modeller and painter first and game second, so I haven't bought anything more current than the current Eldar Codex. But I have the rules and models I need to play 6 different armies in 3rd edition rules, including several Chapter Approved armies..
So we are just meeting in the middle and using 4th edition codexes when possible, though we believe the current Eldar codex makes Eldar in 4th more playable than updating the old 3rd Ed codex.. The others that use 3rd edition rules mostly just need a slight update where they gained the named skills. Points are mostly unchanged between the two editions, so that's not a big issue.
I still buy models that are current, I either convert them into 3/4 ed legal units, or simply better looking stand-ins for old models. Some things, like the cool Necron vehicles, I use the VDR rules to field with the older codex.

I go thru this phase too. I still have so many models to paint I could paint IG or tyranids until their new codeci come out and not have to buy a new model. I still want new models though and they are prohibitively expensive for me now. I woudl like to get a Vulture from FW, and a Valkyrie to turn into a Vendetta. Or two. I wnat a Punisher, just so I can have a tank with a big gatling gun on it.

I love to play the game. At least in a competitive manner. I am finding my lack of "New" models/codexes to be kind of hindering though. Old strategies are no longer working as well as they once did. I've been getting alot of 2nd places instead of 1st places as of late. Kind of hampers what I can get with the "Prize Credit"
