So I came into acquisition of about 500pts of IG a few months ago (cadians). I've played around with them abit and so far lost every game but don't care as they were some of the most enjoyable games so far. I currently use orks for a bit of freedom and krumpin' after tiring of the sphess mahrines. But now am looking at starting an IG army and as I feel they're one of the more characterful armies, thought I'd make a company from Gaunts Ghosts.

So pretty much heres 1000pts, whilst trying to keep in theme.

Colonel-Commissar Gaunt : 90
camo cloak
power weapon

Corbec's Command Squad : 135
camo cloaks
regimental standard (Milo on pipes)
medikit (Dorden)
power weapon
2 flamers

Rawne's Vets : 130
Forward sentries
3 meltaguns

Gol Kolea's Vets : 130
Forward sentries
3 meltaguns
Lijah "Fething" Cuu - hate this guy so much he has to be in here

Ceg Varl's Vets : 145
Forward sentries
3 plasmaguns (he likes to gamble)

Bragg's Vets : 170
Bragg = Gunnery Sergeant Harker
Forward sentries
3 flamers

Mad Larkin's Vets : 115
Forward sentries
3 snipers

Mkolls Scouts (storm troopers) : 85
special operations = behind enemy lines
change carapace armour to camo cloaks (its casual)

Keeping in theme I dont really want any vehicles. They're all vets because they're tanith... and you can get camo cloaks. I think this will be cool to play on the table as they all have to make the best use of cover. I'm not looking to make some awesome death dealing god list, but still want it to be reasonable. So I'm aware there are some shortcomings like no heavy weapons in an infantry army. It's meant to be more of a mid/short range fire fight company so yes, it would get minced by long range and flyers. On the note of fliers they are not so much of an issue as not many people use them where I am.

Intend to get the collectors kit for gaunts ghosts from GW for some characters, then use converted catachan for the rest.

Any suggestions for improvements whilst still keeping in theme? I'm not against heavy weapons for these guys or light vehicles, I just couldn't find anywhere they would fit.

This looks like a fun list, good luck. I'm more of an armoured commander, so I'm not sure how infantry lists work, beyond using cover, weapon load outs given to the infantry are just there to fill in the gaps left by the tanks.

I also love how you have given your units characteristics.

Hey I like ur idea. I think eventually you may become bored with this list as it doesn't seem very competitive. Seeing gaunt and his merry band of snipers get blown off the table will I think errode your Commitment to the tanith. I'd suggest after you finished your core here, to expand with more competitive models. Often in the books they will be fighting alongside other regiments. Maybe you could pick one that was more notable, like an armored column or something. That way you can still be true to the books, but also enjoy yourself in game. Just a thought.

Btw I do think its a great modeling idea. Good luck!

I love the idea! If you are looking to expand on the idea and want to add some armor, you can add 8th Pardus or Narmenian (there is even a General Grizmund figure!) armor.

Tanith is one of the coolest guard regiments around and its always good to see people playing them.

I would second adding in other units as part of an "allied" regiment. Also when Gaunt's Ghosts first came out as a white dwarf list they were the original autocannon spam. Part of their restriction was no heavy weapons over S7. So If you still want to keep a pure tanith vibe then you can always just add some autocannon teams.

Cheers for the response, I quite like the idea of an allied attachment with Grizmund so here's what I got with reshuffling them.

HQ
Colonel-Commissar Gaunt : 90
camo cloak
power weapon

Troops
Rawne's Vets : 125
Forward sentries
3 grenade launchers
autocannon

Kolea's Vets : 125
Forward sentries
3 grenade launchers
autocannon

Varls vets : 125
Forward sentries
3 grenade launchers
autocannon

Heavy Support
LR exterminator : 275
Grizmund = Knight Commander Pask
hull lascannon
sponson multi meltas

LRBT : 150

This leaves me with 140 to make up. Current thoughts on what I could do (in order of best to worst IMO):

1/ varls vets have 3 plasma guns and varl a plasma pistol + ADL with quad gun

2/ mkolls scouts + ADL

3/ Corbecs CCS minus power weapon + Koleas vets have meltas

I think a CCS wont bring much at 1000pts for this list and the exterminator is equipped to deal with hard vehicles so meltas may not be that necessary. Autocannons can deal to lighter vehicles fine. Mkoll wont bring too much as the LRBT provides my ap3 for MEQs at the moment. Favour option 1 as vets get 3+ cover behind ADL and then the plasma fills in the void for ap2 I currently have.

Kinda sucks to loose some characters, but would include them if I ever expanded to 1500pts. There's also two debates I have going on so just wondering how everyone else feels about them.
Firstly grenade launchers or flamers for vets? I like the range of the gl and it can crack light vehicles, frag can deal to light infantry. However flamers are good for assaulters.
Secondly I originally intended to put grizmund in a punisher with the same loadout. However being mostly short range at 24" I think it will be moving most turns and so wont benefit from crack shot. But in the exterminator, the greater range means I can sit there and with tl autocannons at BS4, often all would hit and with crack shot it would pack the hurt onto light vehicles. Plus this would be the best option to deal with MCs IMO.

Any other ideas for that 140pts left over?

Edit: actually its 110pts left over...

Tanith special/heavy weapons focuses on snipers, flamers and missile launchers. You have the first two covered but not the third. I'd suggest adding missile launchers (and an autocannon? for Bragg) to give you some heavier firepower, maintain fluffiness and be more competitive overall. After you do that you can look at "allied" Pardus (armour) and Phantine (air) detachments imo. That's my plan anyway ; ) I was also considering playing sniper teams as Ratlings. Larks is certainly unstable enough for the low LD to be fluffy.

If you do go for allied armour, i'd say focus it on anti-tank and try to keep your infantry as fluffy as possible - flamers and snipers instead of meltas and plas. Can still include missile launchers, though probably more efficient on the back field troops.

How about playing Mkoll as vets but with Mkoll as Harker for infiltrate? The heavy bolter isn't hugely fluffy, but infiltrate is. Could just model it as a long las and say he puts out a lot of shots because he's awesome. Ratlings also get infiltrate so pretty fitting.

Your modified list swapping to grenade launchers is a bit strange, very unfluffy.

Lord Commissar, camo cloak, power weapon
CCS - Camo Cloak, Regimental Standard, 3 snipers
Vets - Forward Sentries, 3 flamers
Vets - Forward Sentries, 3 flamers
Vets - Forward Sentries, 3 Snipers, 1 Missile Launcher
Vets - Forward Sentries, 3 Snipers, 1 Missile Launcher
Vets - Forward Sentries, 3 Snipers, 1 Autocannon
Ratling Squad - 10 Ratlings
Aegis Defence Line w/ Gun emplacement
1000 points

Tanith defended lines several times so it's pretty fluffy having an ADL (not to mention the 4+ cover save, improved to 3+ thanks to forward sentries and cloaks : p). The Gun emplacement, 2 tread fethers and 1 autocannon are a fair bit of anti armour though by no means hugely competitive. Could replace the flamer vets with a platoon for more bodies - not *all* the ghosts were elite ; )
