This my wife's non-comp Tau list based off just about her entire Tau collection. Most of the XV8's and one XV22 are magnetized (1 XV8 has glued Plasma and another a glued FB) are modular. No kroot as she does not like, and they have lost traction in this edition.

HQ:
1 Shas'el FireKnife w/Sheild,hwMT 107
1 Bodyguard Firestorm w/Sheild,hwMT, BSF 83
1 Ethereal w/Honor Blade, Sheild Drone, GD 85

Elite:
2 XV8 Bladestorms w/MT 116
2 XV8 Fireforge w/TA, BSF, Team Leader 126
3 xv22 w/Marker Drone,FB,2xTL,ML, Team Leader 147

Troop:
10 FW PG,'ui,BK,BSF 125
10 FW PG,'ui,BK,BSF 125
10 FW PG,'ui,BK.BSF 125
8 FW w/Carbine,PG,EMP,'ui,2 GD,BK ,BSF 147

FA
6 Vespids w/Strain leader 102
8 GD 96
8 GD 96

HVY:
Broadside w/Target Array,BSF,Team Leader 88
Sniper Drone Team 80
RailHead w/MT,Dpod,SMS,BSF, Target Lock 185

Total: 1848

FireStorm MP,BC
Fireknife MP,PR
FireForge MP,FB
BladeStorm PR,BC

Bladestorms are there for targeting good inv. units like TH/SS with quantity fire

Fireforge team is there to handle both light and heavy armor, no MT as I don't expect to fire both the MP and FB at the same time enough to be worth the points.

FireStorm/Fireknife team is a multi purpose threat unit. I have considered making the Fireknife a Firestorm+6 for a bit better AA.

The 2 GD squads are just a cheese attempt at AA. 8 TL S5 shots has a decent chance of hurting av 10/11 flyers. Also makes a good charge screen for the FWs.

The Carbine FWs are there because they are modeled that way and I don't have a free DF to run them as Pathfinders.

Looks fun and casual. What kind of feedback were you looking for?

If you want some melee defence I suggest taking 30 orc boys and an ork warboss (probably in mega armour). If you want to stay fluffly you can just use kroot models for these guys.

If you want to go max cheese you could try the list I posted in http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/494517.page#5075932 but it's very spammy and probably not that fun to play against.

Going for a pure Tau list. Wife is a currently "fun " player just starting 40k. That said she also does not enjoy getting rolled, where as I don't really mind as long as it is done with a little class. I am trying to give a good broad feel tau list that can be tweaked it her play style as she learns Tau and 40k. She will be coming off a shooty Ashlynn list in Warmachine were the FLG Warmachine guys, who also happen to be the areas best while still not being TFGs, are grooming her as "surprise".

I am mostly looking for Dakka's thoughts on the list as I am mostly a nid player and want to be sure the list won't just be laughed at by something with saves.

The vespid will probably stay as she likes the models, the GD clouds are likely to evolve to some kind of suit as will the Ethereal but she needs them to make 1850 at the moment.

I'd say play a few games with this list and if you get rolled continuously then try a list with 60+ fire warriors (even if you have to proxy them just to find out how badass it is). The volume fire they put out really does make up for it:

A good +1BS, twin linked, Fireknife costs ~80 points

VS a terminator your twin linked plasmaguns have
0.9 hits (3+ twin linked) = 0.75 wounds (2+ to wound) = 0.5 wounds (5+ invulnerable save)

8 firewarriors
4 hits (4+) = 2.66 wounds (3+ to wound) = 0.444 wounds (2+ save)

Now there's the missile pods too obviously but it goes to show that the AP2 weapons are about as good at killing AV 2 terminators as volume fire from fire warriors thanks to their awesome str 5. As soon as you start adding marker light hits then your killing more terminators with pulse rifles than plasma gun (per point). I'd take 8 warriors with a 4+ save over 1 with a 3+ and 2 wounds. Remember your fire warriors can capture objectives too.

If you really want vespids I'd put them in a transport and try to unload them into cover for a charge the next turn. If you play forgeworld stuff I hear the Baracuda is pretty awesome.

Switch out the Shield Gens for Shield Drones. Cheaper, and the Drones risk their metal skins versus the plethora of STR8, INstant Death fun that is some present in 6e.

Just toss. It might be a really cool model, but he's such a liability for no perceivable gain to the army. Pretty much any Challenger in a h2h is going to swing first, and just butcher him.

Some points uselessly spent here, showing 5th ed hangover:
a. Toss the BSFs, as their guns are 36" already, and what are they going to shoot at during NightFight, that won't have either a 5+ Cover anyway? BSFs should only go on FireKnives, XV88s, and other AP2/1 goodness.
2. BKs. The Team Leader upgrade and BK, allows '2' guys to rally out of the 10. Not worth it, IMHO - - but see below**
3. PhotonGs. You don't want to mitigate an assault's results. You want your wife's FWs to lose the combat and break or die, so you can shoot the attackers on your subsequent turn. PGs might soften that first assault enough that the FWs will survive the first round, but they're likely to fail/break/die on the subsequent round, meaning her opponent gets his assaulters lose on *his* turn, to attack more Tau.

**Also, I'd pare the FW units down to 8 guys, not 10. That way the Team Leader and BK upgrades are pretty much unnecessary, as it'd only be to rally one guy.

Yay! Bugs! Frisbees! Seriously, get an add'l two Vespid ... there was some MathHammer a ways back, about 9 being the optimum # of killy efficiency. Otherwise, 6 are far too easily snuffed. I like the GDs filling an AA role.

Spend points on Shield Drones, absolutely. If you take no other advice given, provide this XV88 some frisbee ablatives.

Cool enough.

Consider 1750, or better yet, 1500. With Bugs, the ethereal & FW upgrades, the list is 'pushed'; given bling that fatten it, but not for the better. 1500 is still an okay number for tau. Larger games push builds in favor of other armies.

Can you explain your battlesuits for the benefit of people who don't know the abbreviations?

Why is "fireknife" easier to say then Plasma/Missile pod?

Easier to process/type for me when setting out the lists and it was copy pasted. There is a list of what each suit has at the bottom of the list.

On the list, just need some more drones.

Kinda planning on it, hence the 'UI upgrade on the FW. Also one of the latter mention point pads. May replace with Shadowsun when built, better to run as Shadow sun or a twin FB xv8?

1. Several Necrons that love night fight, and used mostly used to eat points.
2. Good point had not really mathed that one out.
3. Forgot about that problem, I was looking more at the 8" stealth bubble provided, which will help reduce the damage from dpod lists.

Glad you approve. I was already shopping for the extra bugs, but thinking that with the Stealth ML support they should be able to break or wipe a combat squad on a back field objective.

The second broadside, and extra wings should help strip some of the excess bling. Will also play with reducing the point total.

Cheesedoodler, FireKnife is also cooler to say, and "ssile pod" is that many letter more to type.

For points, a TW-FB ... Sunforge?

Whether it's Imotekh's darkness or the game's first Turn NightFighting, BSF still has no applicable impact for FireWarrior Pulse Rifles. They're AP5. The *only* use would be if your opponent foolishly left a AV11 vehicle in range, and the BSF denies its Cover Save. But really, who is running rhinos? Any DE skimmer already has a 5+ Cover 'jink'. And your statement I highlighted in orange is sufficient reason enough to eliminate them; if you're just spending points to make a limit, then the list is too fat or is considered "pushed" .

It'd be nice to catch a PM to hear how the list does.

First game went okay, but got called to early to count. The BK, and FW BSF's do need to go. Drop th PG's and I can add the second Broadside.

The Ethereal bomb worked well as planned.

I am wondering though if the Ion head might not be a better choice that the Railhead with 2 Broadsides, for weight of fire agianst things with high T like Dlords or Tomb spiders.
